Pop stars in Democratic politics

Pop stars are definitely not shy about taking sides in American politics, as we saw when artists such as Madonna, Cher, Katy Perry, Lady Gaga and Beyonce all rallied behind President Obama in his respective campaigns.

On their own, singers are just voters. They might not know a whole lot about politics, and you might not care what they think. But a lot of people, especially young people, do. And young people matter. The 2014 midterms saw the lowest youth turnout in 70 years, contributing to sweeping Republican victories a few short years after the youth vote helped President Obama carry states he wouldn’t otherwise have carried in 2012.

Celebrities were active in President Obama’s re-election campaign. Cher and Kathy Griffin filmed an ad specifically attacking Republican candidates who made distasteful comments concerning women’s issues, such as rape and abortion. The ad was geared toward women, but by using pop icons to make the message — along with including LGBT-supportive language in the ad — it targeted younger voters for whom those figures and issues resonate....

Yep. Hollywood idiots tell us to support liberals. Who would have guessed??

I recall a story from a Madonna concert shortly before the 2012 election. She urged her concert audience to make sure to get out and vote. But then she told them : “you better f***cking vote for Obama”. Always keeping it classy.

sarcasm

I remember Eddie Vedder (lead singer Pearl Jam) making some comment about how stupid Bush was pretty soon after 911, and he was almost booed off the stage.

I’d have booed him too, if I had been there. I truly despise it when musicians use the stage to voice their (usually ignorant) politics. Yeah, they have a right to their opinion, but I didn’t pay gobs of money to listen to it when you’re supposed to be playing music.

The worst I’d ever experienced was at a Roger Waters concert in the late 80s. I was expecting it, given what a git Waters is, but it was worse than I’d feared. He took time out from the show to take audience questions, and answered pretty much all of them with Iran-Contra this, Reagan warmonger that, yadda, yadda. I was like “shut up and play Comfortably Numb!”

I agree. Everyone is entitled to their own belief.
How stupid is it to piss off half of your fans. Ask the Dixie Chicks about that little gem.

Shut up and sing!

I remember once that Alice Cooper said he couldn’t understand why people listen to Rock and Roll stars when they talk about politics. He went on to say that they drink and take drugs and most often don’t know what they re talking about. He said that when he was young and anyone started talking about politics he would go into his room and turn up the music.

It wouldn't surprise me if Alice Cooper is a conservative.

Smart celebrities often are. But the smartest celebrities stay silent on politics.

I can't tell you many musicians I like that have horrible politics.

It ruins a lot of good music for me.
