Polite Suggestions for FreeRepublic nextpointoh [Vanity]

  1. Currently, Topics are tied individual Forums, such that the 50 states (but not DC) show up as Topics for a thread posted in or moved to the GOP forum -- but the 50 states (and DC) show up as "US:(state name)" in threads posted in or moved to the News forum. Those state lists don't cross. Same goes for the duplicate Topics found in Chat and Blogger forums -- and those lists are all separate from one another. Keywords are available across all Forums.
All three systems should be merged into a Tags system.

  2. Currently, the URL (which I still think of as "new style" but they've been like this for over ten years) is http://www.freerepublic.com/focus/f-news/(topic number)/posts
Eliminating separate Forums/Topics/Keywords would simplify and save a little bandwidth for FR and for its users -- http://www.freerepublic.com/(topic number)/posts

  3. Currently, posting a new topic is a pain in the rear, especially if, at the first click of the process, the source turns out to be unusable.
First step of the process should be, paste in the URL, click Preview, and if not okay, know immediately; otherwise, the software would pull an appropriate excerpt, nab the new Tags for the topic out of the metatags et al on the source page, name the author, title, date, etc, and IOW work like social media sites work in that regard.
Also, to save time for the Mods, and reduce duplication of topics, someone in Preview would have, say, ten minutes to finish posting, during which time that particular URL would be reserved or frozen, so others wouldn't be able to post it preemptively. After the ten minutes, Preview would be cancelled.

Oh, I know. Number one, I'm using Mac OS 9.2.2 on a nearly 20 year old PowerMac 7600 (souped up). Number two, Windows 10 is an awful lot like 7, in that it dumps that stupid dual-menu crap pushed down everyone's throats in W8. I mean, really, a dual level menu? I remember that from 30+ years ago, the Zardax word processor on the Apple II.

For all of American history, grammar and spelling have been the indicators by which we distinguish not only between the educated and the unlettered, but between the intelligent and the stupid.

They are important.

I usually call them. But I am careful of where and when.

In the era of texting, which is made easier by spelling and grammar shortcuts, I’m afraid you’re fighting a rising tide.

Probably.

It would be nice if 'View Replies' was 'No Replies' or 'View n Replies'.

Or perhaps blank unless there was a reply to view?...

When I wrote, "Currently, Topics are tied individual Forums", I managed a typo, s/b ""Currently, Topics are tied to individual Forums". Here's an example of what a Tags system would look like. In this example, "blindedmewithscience" would be a user-designated optional tag -- only one per topic, and by the person posting only -- that would please JimRob (just guessing of course). BTW, these work right now.

An edit function in the first 10 minutes or so would save me from myself.

Think of the fun we would all lose out on if posters could edit their posts. It's just not worth it. As Laz said (more than once) in an epic event: "DON'T LET THE PLANE LAND!"

If we could hit a button to edit our posts, Laz would hit it.

As it stands, we can't even delete a post or topic, and start over.

Version numbers, for many programs, go something like “v 5.1”, which would be spoken aloud as “version five point one”.

So the “next point oh” is in that same system. “Version we-don’t-know point oh”, as in point 0 (which is usually what next major releases of programs are they are like 5.0, 6.0, etc).
