Companies need to step in to help feed families hurt by budget cuts

The United States is a nation built on the values of equal opportunity, hard work and self-determination. It prides itself on the belief that in this land of opportunity any woman, man and child should be able to reach their full potential. The challenge is to create the environment in which people can thrive. That includes a strong social compact in which government, business and the social (non-profit) sector invest in the well-being of individuals and families and ensure pathways to opportunity and success. At the most basic level that begins with ensuring access to life's basic needs, including quality, affordable food. Sadly, this is not the reality for all too many Americans.

Despite their best efforts, millions of Americans are struggling to make ends meet. Many people across the country are working two or even three jobs to put food on the tables and keep a roof over their heads. A report supported by City Harvest found that, in New York City alone, over 2.7 million men, women and children face hunger. Across the United States, 42 million people are "food insecure" — meaning that they don't know with certainty where their next meal will come from, if at all....

Did I miss the civics class about free food? Did President Trump get the food stamp and WIC programs eliminated and the Mika flapdoodle pushed it out of the news?

Today it is millions of hungry people, in New York alone. Next week we will read about the epidemic of obesity sweeping the nation.

It prides itself on the belief that in this land of opportunity any woman, man and child should be able to reach their full potential without being hindered by the intrusive interference of a confiscatory Nanny State and its army of nosy bureaucrats for whom it is an article of faith that they know what's "good for you" better than you, yourself.

There, fixed it!

Starbucks Commie.
As predicted, hunger stories come out of the woodwork when a Repub is POTUS. Yawn.
Of course when he claims companies need to feed people, it’s the companies’ customers who get to pay.
My tax dollars support a lot beyond my household, and I envision the “takers” laughing at us tax slaves. The lifestyle of a household of welfare recipients who band together and pool EBT, WIC, disability, etc probably exceeds mine. No guilt here!

Christendom used to fill this void. Little by little Caesar took it over.
It’s a profound question and the difficulty of answering it (only God really can) has resulted in the rise of our secular left.

I reject the socialist notion that other entities are responsible for my well being. The corollary to that becomes I am somehow responsible for the well being of many others, and should support them. Socialism, a proven failure.

There's already a solution to that in the Leftist toolbox:

You shouldn't speak of "hunger," but rather of "malnutrition" (the meaning of which could conceivably be conveniently expanded to encompass both obesity and starvation). Just like you shouldn't reference "Global Warming," but rather "Climate Change" (so that any weather anomaly can be regarded as a politically actionable occurrence).

Very succinctly put!

Food insecurity is not starvation. They had to come up with some sort of phrase since there are very few people actually starving to death in this country.

Here’s a thought. Before you get gummint assistance you need to step on a scale...

Conservatives need to capitalize on this child, Charlie Gard’s story. The question is “whose body is it”? When the State pays for it, it is THIERS. That, right there, is the fracture line in the global socialist’s agenda. Just whose body is it you are living in? Yours or theirs?

Better yet...everyone getting "help" needs to WORK for it in some needed way!

Charity is fine and good; as long as it is PRIVATE CHARITY and not stealing from the rest of us, without our consent!

I agree in concept but remember, “work for help” will end up being a new gummint program administered by Rats...

Then I'm all for the old fashioned workhouse !

The Old Testament is spot on..."THOSE WHO WILL NOT WORK, SHALL NOT EAT"!

Once upon a time, being on "the Dole" was shameful and most people would do almost anything to NOT be on it.

My compassion ran out long, long, long ago.

That takes us back to the old Dickens era. I don’t know what the answers are, anymore. I am just old enough to remember all the mistakes.

People would be able to feed themselves easier if they were allowed to grow food and raise food in cities and suburban areas. But there are laws preventing it.

People romanticize the 50s. Happy days and all that. I grew up in the 50s and had parents who went through the depression. It was rough. Look at your old family photos. Obesity was unheard of. Look at those old photos of Vets. They were wearing their old uniforms. How many of us can do that? I remember going to the grocery store with grandma and mom, I got grandma to pay a dime for me to ride the horse out front and my mom pitched a fit. Wasting a dime like that!

My mom grew up in the dust bowl in eastern Colorado. She was tough as a nail.

You really hit the nail on the head here. Charity used to be a function of the church. Gummint is the new god so the church can have no place. IMHO, the church is at least partially to blame. They let the gummint usurp their role and now wonder why they are becoming irrelevant. Like I say, I don’t know what the answers are I am just old enough to remember the mistakes. I am sure we both agree “No king but Jesus” is the best answer and another Great Awakening is overdue but it has to be real faith and not a “Stepford Wives” kind of nightmare.

There are a series of you tube vids by a guy that are interesting. IIRC, “Urban Farmer” where the guy is doing just that. If you watch them all you can see him evolve. He starts out as sort of a libtard but he tries not to get political. By the end, even though he tries to not get political, you can see him becoming conservative as he deals with gummint obstruction. I watched all of them just because I knew where his journey would take him and sure enough, it did. But it is interesting, he shows how he can make $50 to 60 K a year by farming his and various neighbor’s yards.

You can imagine, in the beginning it is sort of a “hippy dippy” idea. Growing produce in your yard for sale. But he shows how to make it work and how to do it. He had people ask to come learn how so he let them and at the end he is getting a letter from the gummint about how he can’t have “unpaid interns”. Great entertainment.

How many of those millions of starving people own XBoxes, Playstations, laptops, tablets, smartphones, Bluetooth, flat screens, smoke drugs, go clubbing, have gold in their mouths and around their necks, and continue to pop out babies?
