Edward R. Murrow used his position as a journalist to expose the anti-communist witch hunt in the 50's.
I remember seeing some of the television coverage of the Army-McCarthy hearings. I was too young to fully understand what was going on, but I recognized that Murrow thought something was wrong.
If he were alive today, I'm sure he would recognize that the current anti-Russian crusade makes less sense than Sen. Joseph McCarthy's anti-communist crusade in the 50's.
There was a Cold War between the United States and Soviet Union in the 50's. There is no good reason for the United States and Russia to be enemies today.
The question Joe McCarthy asked in the 50's was: "Are you now or have you ever been a member of the communist party?" The question today is: "have you ever talked to a Russian?"
Supporters of the Russian meddling witch hunt claim that Russian hackers were spying on the Democratic Party's emails. The fact is that the Russian government has arrested four of those hackers [ including the deputy head of the FSB security agency’s Centre for Information Security, Col. Sergei Mikhailov and his deputy Maj. Dmitry Dokuchayev]. and charged them with working for the CIA.
Thus any inquisition on this issue should begin with Obama administration officials and seek answers to the following questions: "What did President Obama know? When did he know it? and What did he do about it?"
The witch hunters also charge the Russians with "planting fake news". The traditional term is "propaganda" and governments have been doing it for generations. Great Britain started doing it to us during WWI. After the 9/11 attack the British convinced our government that Iraq's WMD program was more extensive than it was.
Prior to the 2004 election, the Democratic Republic of Vietnam [DRV] released a story that insured that Gov. Bob Kerrey would not run against Sen John Kerry [whom the DRV was supporting] for the Democratic presidential nomination. The DRV had previously provided "fake news" to try to influence voters in the 1968 and 1972 elections.
It's increasingly obvious that it's the British, rather than the Russians, who are meddling in American politics. The British are once again using "fake intelligence" to influence American politics.
After the 9/11 attack the British used fake intelligence about WMD in Iraq to get President George W. Bush to help them invade Iraq. The British treated rumors about WMD as if they were proven facts.
Now they are using fake intelligence to undermine President Donald Trump. Patrick Cockburn in the "London Independent" says the charges about Trump's alleged association with the Russians are based on information that is at least as unreliable as the claims about Iraq's WMD.

The Left said “HOW DARE YOU?!!” accuse members of the State Department and US military of being disloyal to America.
Nidal Hassan, Brad Manning, Bowe Bergdahl, Barack Obama, Hillary Clinton. McCarthy was right.
Murrow was a premier leftist FAKE Journalist who used his position to cover up the extensive Communist and Communist sympathizer network within the Federal Government and other institutions. He did grievous harm to our nation.
There is no comparison to the McCarthy hearings and the current Russian supposedly election intervention. Just like the Weinstein coverup for so many years our government was covering up Russian influence in Hollywood while McCarthy was exposing it and in the process has been demonized.
McCarthy was right.
The communist infiltration of media and entertainment is blatantly apparent to all but the most obtuse.
The Left also tried to turn the Army hearings on their head by accusing McCarthy and others of impropriety in some vacation request that an enlisted man got for his testimony.
Also they drop hints about “fairies” aimed at Roy Cohn (a homosexual who did of AIDS).
Even today when the Left writes books about the supposed “witchhunt” of Communists, there is NO reference to the KGB files that were made public in the 1990s. Over 20 years and they still won’t go there.

You are so correct. As I recall McCarthy went after communist spies in the Truman administration. The spies were identified by monitoring Russian communications as we had broken the Russian code. The intelligence community leadership trusted Tail Gunner Joe and provided him the information so He knew who the communists were and had them dead to rights. Accordingly, he was assulted by the communist sympathizing press and academia. The House, not to be outdone, started looking at communists in the film industry etc. McCarthy is usually blamed for the actions of the House UnAmerican Activities Committee. McCarthy was quite successful in removing communist spies from our government. For this the communists destroyed the patriotic senators reputation. And even after the truth was made public in the Verona Papers, the lies proffered against this good man continue to be spread. Even here on Free Republic. It is shameful.

Red Channels wasn’t a government publication. The lists of Communist sympathizers were privately compiled.
And the film industry employed the boycotted screenwriters by giving them pseudonyms. Couldn’t let the ticket buying public know the truth.
Ed Murrow was ‘moderate Republican” if you look at his political ancestory.
His forefathers were Republicans in North Carolina who helped the GOP hold onto some political power down there in the Reconstruction, post Reconstruction era until the Democrats could rewrite the laws to disenfranchise black voters.
He did the bidding of the moderate GOPe in trashing Joe McCarthy.
They say in Murrow’s biography that President Eisenhower patted Murrow on the back after the McCarthy hit piece in prime time TV.
I remember the Charlie McCarthy hearings. They were right after Winchell v. Mahoney.
I watched Point of Order on DVD once but it was distributed by a Communist filmmaker (who interviewed the Weather Underground while they were hiding out in the 70s).
It was purported to be “found” news footage of the hearings but I don’t know if there was any editing of said footage.
