The Trap-Proof Mouse
Self ^ | 03/05/2020 | Henry Noel

At some point in mid-January, a mouse found his way into my house. This isn't an unusual occurrence. Over the past ten years I've dealt with mice on at least five occasions, including one in which an entire family set up housekeeping behind the kitchen counters. So I know a thing or two about catching mice. Namely, you spot one, set a trap, and wait for the inevitable. It never fails, or so I thought.

What do you do when you've got a mouse that refuses to be caught in a conventional trap, even though he flirts with them and comes right to the brink of annihilation before dashing away? That was my plight from mid-January through Valentine's Day of this year. Watch the mouse elude every effort to catch him, as he ends up making me almost pity him for his ultimate demise.

Can’t you get a cat or a Jack Russell terrier?

I was going to watch this, clicked over and saw 24 minutes.

No thanks.

You’re going to have to deal with this a little better, or else you’ll have snakes in the house when the weather warms up.

***Namely, you spot one, set a trap,***

You spot one, you probably have ten.

One of my earlier houses had a mouse problem. I finally got sick of laying traps, which tended to snap back on my fingers all the time, and we got a cat.

Problem solved. Not a big fan of cats but neither were the mice and that was good for us!

Peanuts or peanut butter has worked well for us.

Not in this case. In fact, with one exception, all of the mouse invasions I've had in the past ten years involved single mice.

A cat's out of the question. My daughter has a Schipperke, but the problem is, she can't get into the tight places a mouse can get into.

Watch the video to the end and you'll see I finally caught it by using an old-fashioned Victor trap with the metal bait-holder. Even so, he almost eluded the trap and ended up getting caught by the snout and suffocating to death.

I used almond slices and peanut butter. You can tell he was dying to get at the bait, but it was one instinct vying with the other, and fear won out over hunger ... until he got a bit too complacent and went to meet his maker.

Get a 5 gal bucket about 1/2 filed with water. put a dowel across the top and smear peanut butter around the center point of the dowel.

They will fall in and drown.

That's my problem. I'm not afraid of a two-ounce mouse, but it's very unpleasant to have them jump out when you're not expecting them!

:-) I’ve had some smart ones too. Peanut Butter gone and trap not sprung.

Honestly, I don’t think I could have gotten this one to climb the ramp to the bucket. He was so damned wary of every human artifice, which is what made him such an interesting story.

Glue traps.

Yes, if you watch even part of the video you'll see that I tried those, and not a few! He'd hover over them, but would never walk on them. Go to 8:54 of the video and you'll see the closest I came to getting him on a glue trap, which wasn't very close at all!
