Some PlayStation 4 users who downloaded the latest 8.0 update got an unwelcome surprise this morning: their console informed them that Sony had the right to record their voice for moderation purposes.
Here is Sonys exact language:
Following this update, users are seeing a notification about Party Safety and that voice chats in parties may be recorded. Voice chat recording for moderation is a feature that will be available on PS5 when it launches, and will enable users to record their voice chats on PS5 and submit them for moderation review. The pop up youre seeing on PS4 right now is to let you know that when you participate in a chat with a PS5 user (post-launch), they may submit those recordings from their PS5 console to SIE.
To translate that statement, it seems that by joining a voice chat, even with the older PlayStation 4, your voice can be recorded and submitted to Sony for moderation by another user. This could certainly be invasive in theory, anything you say in a voice chat could be sent to Sony without your explicit consent. But the feature could also be a useful tool to help people report bad party members that may be harassing them.

The original Model 1984 Telescreen has blossomed into many different forms. What is common to all is that people gladly invite them into their homes.
“It is for Party Safety, da Comrade?”
Seriously, if a player verbally states at the beginning of any party conversation that they do not consent to being recorded, how does any subsequent recording square with state law that makes it illegal to record?
I prefer to be outdoors in the fresh air as much as possible.
My experience with video games consists of throwing quarters into Space Invaders and PacMan at bars back in the early 1980s. A little Wolfenstein 3D and DOOM in the early 1990s when I first got a home computer, but that's about the extent of my video game experience.
Unless you count FreeCell. A lot of FreeCell over the years. I got pretty good at it. That was my go-to game during long, boring conference calls at work.
I am sure more kids will probably call SWAT Teams on other players because they lost a game.
That use to happen from what I heard.
I guess if you agree to the update, then you have agreeed.
Use of the product will imply consent.
Just like most websites. The PS5 log-in will probably have a used consent agreement that will include monitoring and recording of game chat.
What is kind of a grey area is that anyone using the product below the age of consent can on enter into a binding contract. That would leave out a great many users. Maybe the majority.
Same here
Oh yeah that was me too at the arcade as a kid. Putting quarters in Pac Man, Space Invaders, Donkey Kong, Galaxy, Defender, Battle Zone, GORF, etc...
The last days for me was Castle Wolfenstein on a Commodore 64 along with some other games like Spy Hunter. Think that was 1986 when I got bored with video games and started chasing women. Haha!
If people reject it, then Sony may have to correct it.
Not an issue for me. I turn off team chat anyway, nor do I speak, so when I stomp a mudhole in someone’s ass on world of tanks, I can’t hear their butthurt that my tiger tank killed their postwar IS-3
Someone made one of those ‘click’ agreements and sent it to Microsoft a few years back. It states that by using the software Microsoft agreed to give them a big pile of money or something...
I believe it got tossed out - but I wonder if anyone here remembers that incident and has details? It might have set ‘precedent’ on how such click-agreements operate... such as only containing standard language and ‘common’ protections for both parties...
Because it was impossible for most people to read and comprehend the legalese in those click agreements.
I remember South Park did an episode about that once, and by clicking on it one of the south park kids ended up being the middle of a ‘human centipede’.
They wanted to put Lady Gaga at the end of the centipede, noting that she was the only one who did it voluntarily.
Exactly, I never turn on chat to begin with, problem solved
I do single player stuff pretty much all the time anyway, and change my character to female when I can so I get the hot lesbian cut screens in bed with alien chicks like in Mass Effect, lol
Better not say anything “Racist”, especially if you want to run for political office in the future.
Yeah. Microsoft has managed to ruin Solitaire, too. Now they want you to get a MS account in order to play Solitaire, and it is really difficult to get the game to load unless you are online.
I heard about something like that in mass effect. I play mostly world of tanks, war thunder, I’m a fallout fanatic and waiting for far cry 6
Paris terrorists may have used PlayStation 4 to secretly plan attacks
report bad party members
The communists use this.
The software is designed to block you from the party chat if you do not agree. There is a dialog presented as you attempt to enter the chat. Youtubers familiar with this can provide more info...
