I need some help with CD drives (Vanity)
February 12, 2005

Posted on 02/12/2005 1:50:43 PM PST by Howlin

I put a music CD that came with a book into my computer last night, played, and now my computer won't recognize either my CD or my CD writer.

I've tried everything; Norton, Restore, rebooting.

Does anybody have any suggestions about what I might try now?

When I ran ADD HARDWARE the CD drives have YELLOW exclamantion points next to them and say

Windows successfully loaded the device driver for this hardware but cannot find the hardware device. (Code 41)

That sounds like some progress....hmmm....hardware trouble perhaps.

This is not a laptop?

If not , you might open it up and check the cables....what else is on the same IDE cable and is that device working? If so then check the cable attaching directly to the CD Writer itself.... However if neither device on the IDE cable is working then check the cable where it is plugged into the motherboard....

There are several things that could have occured. Re-boot will tell the tale. A cold restart is best.

I've deleted them from Device Manager and now I'm going to reboot. First I need to find the CD for them!

(And thank you ALL. I knew I could count on some help here.)

Unplug power cord to your computer....

Then open your computer and carefully unplug both connectors to your CD player. To be really sure unplug where it connects to the motherboard too. Plugin-unplug a few times to rub off any oxidation and to reseat the connectors. Push them in all the way.

You prolly don't want to do the above. Save it for last resort

Should have ask how old the computer is, and when the interior (cabling) was last touched.

My computer is in a room that has the window open 90% of the year. I have to reseat video cards, memory chips, hard drive connectors every once in a while. I'm fairly sure it's due to humidity and oxidation hurting contacts

A frequent problem.her drives are likely daisy chained and the connector at the mother boardmay have lost it's connection.

We shall see.

Not sure what the heck it is. I have changed and upgraded a half dozen times. I have used multiple mothers and I can't recall what is running now.

A driver was loaded but Windows cannot find the device. This happens when Windows does not detect a non-Plug and Play device.

If the device was removed, uninstall the driver, install the device, and then click Scan for hardware changes to reinstall the driver. If the hardware was not removed, obtain a new or updated driver for the device.

If the device is a non-Plug and Play device, a newer version of the driver might be needed. To install non-Plug and Play devices, use the Add Hardware wizard. Click Performance and Maintenance on Control Panel, click System, and on the Hardware tab, click Add Hardware Wizard.

On the General Properties tab of the device, click Troubleshoot to start the troubleshooting wizard.

Probably not SCSI , as that is a very deliberate act, I have a
a PCI SCSI card ( only 160 Mbyte / s transfer rate ) but 3 SCSI Maxtor Atlas 10 K disks for 72 Gigabytes of capacity.

Motherboard is Gigabyte with an AMD64 3000+ processor. kind of overkill for a Browsing system, but very responsive.... I love it.
