I need some help with CD drives (Vanity)
February 12, 2005

Posted on 02/12/2005 1:50:43 PM PST by Howlin

I put a music CD that came with a book into my computer last night, played, and now my computer won't recognize either my CD or my CD writer.

I've tried everything; Norton, Restore, rebooting.

Does anybody have any suggestions about what I might try now?

Should have added , that I am running Linux..Xandros V3, which also helps with responsiveness.....XP Pro is slow in contrast as a browsing machine, even with Firefox..,

Question, does your AMD run SP-2.

I have a second machine with a DFI motherboard and an AMD64 3000+ running XP Pro that I have updated to SP2, use it for TV viewing , has an ATI AIW 9600 video card, and regular 7200 rpm disk not as responsive as a browsing machine. have it off the internet because of all the Malware....

I traced it down to the processor or chip set in my laptop.

The 64 bit architecture balks and crashes on SP-2 security algorithms.

Okay; I went to Device Driver and uninstalled the cd rom and the cd writer.

I shut it off.

When I turned it back on, it FOUND both of them; I got the "bubble"

But then nothing happened.

Isn't it suppose to ask me to install it?

dennis and Ernest, I've never opened it at all. It's that clam thing! I've never added anything to it, period. (But I will if I have to!)

Ernest it's an 8250

If it is not asking it should be satified.

Try it??? and if itisnot working, take another gander at the system directory and see if it is flagged and why.

Well, now they have yellow exclamation points by them again in the Device manager.

When I put a CD into the drives, the green lights flashes for a few times and then just stops.

And now I am getting this message:

Windows cannot start this hardware device because its configuration information (in the registry) is incomplete or damaged. (Code 19)

Have you checked the interior connections to make sure they're solid?

Picking an earlier restore point won't work?

howlin,you have a internal problem.

I can't be absolutely sure what it is, but the likely thing is a loose or dirty connection on the mother board.

If not that, it is a bad I/0 and that requires replacement of the entire board usually.

if you want to get into it, I can help to guide you and keep you from making a booboo. You will need to be able to get the case open.the rest is done with the fingers.

I don't know if this will help, but since you're running XP Pro, it supports Remote Desktop. Someone (preferably an trustworthy expert) could log on to your computer and check it out. That might be faster and easier trying than trying to diagnose and repair the registry yourself.

So he now sees the hardware?

Coldheat, dennis ...does XP have some kind of diagnostic to exercise the device? Howlin , is this system still under warranty, do you have a service contract, you may need to contact Dell....

What it it is telling me now is that it is failing to exchange info withthe drives.

It certainlymay be a minor connector fault. It could also be a serious hardare failure in the board.
