VIRGIN MARY DEFILED ON “SOUTH PARK”
Catholic League ^ | December 8, 2005 | William Donohue

Posted on 12/09/2005 5:50:13 AM PST by NYer

Catholic League president Bill Donohue remarked today about last night’s episode of “South Park” (it will run again for the next three nights):

“A ‘South Park’ character gets a DWI and is ordered to attend AA meetings.  Told about the 12-step program, he concludes that he needs a miracle to cure him.  The plot then focuses on a statue of the Virgin Mary who is ‘bleeding out her ass.’  The Vatican dispatches a cardinal to investigate and he is sprayed with blood when he walks behind the statue.  He then declares this to be a miracle, which draws even more people.  The alcoholic, now in a wheelchair, is also sprayed with blood: he then claims he is cured and jumps out of his seat.

“Pope Benedict XVI goes to investigate.  He, too, is sprayed with blood when he walks behind the statue.  A reporter says, ‘The pope investigated further and determined that the statue was not bleeding out its ass, but its vagina.’  To which the pope replies: ‘A chick bleeding out her vagina is no miracle.  Chicks bleed out their vaginas all the time.’

“Comedy Central is a subsidiary of MTV, which is owned by Viacom.  On the board of directors of Viacom is a practicing Catholic and a distinguished public servant, Joseph A. Califano; he served under Presidents Johnson and Carter.  We are writing to him today requesting that he intervene in this matter.  We want a) an apology to Roman Catholics and b) a pledge that this episode be permanently retired and not be made available on DVD.  In the event Viacom does not cooperate, we are asking Mr. Califano to issue his own statement of condemnation.  We are asking our members to contact him as well.  Remember, they chose to insult Our Blessed Mother on the eve of the Immaculate Conception, and the holy day itself

“Joseph A. Califano is chairman of the board of The National Center on Addiction and Substance Abuse.  He can be reached at CASA, 633 Third Avenue, NY, NY 10017; phone, 212-841-5200; fax, 212-956-8020; email, employment@casacolumbia.org.”

I think the reason South Park stings so badly is because the barbs are being stuck not so much into the religion as they are into some of the practitioners of it.

Exactly. The focus wasn't the Virgin Mary or Christianity or "Miracles", it was about people using their religious beliefs as an excuse to engage in poor behavior.

I liked the mormon one becase it was like a political cartoon, making a real point.

Most SP shows do. Two weeks ago animal rights activists were shooting and killing cops to help send a killer whale to the moon where it, too, died. But there is a lot of crude humor. Some people can't get past that to find the "real point."

My mother, for instance, would agree with many of the real points. She would not, however, find the episodes funny because of the crudeness. Therefore, when I am at my parents' house for holidays I do not watch South Park with my mom in the room.

I don't have to see it to be offended. So offended that if I were to greet them in person that I would "offend" them by punching them in the mouth.

Tell that to the millions who are alive today because of a 12-step program.

It works if you work it. It's the work that works. :~D

The point is, at 10 pm at night, it's time to unwind after a long day. I just want to sit down for a while and turn off my brain.

10? DVR will set you free from the clutches of the network program schedulers.

There's a big part of me that wouldn't be comfortable at all if my Dad liked it :~D

Besides, she's busy - watching South Park with me

ROFLMAO! That's the same excuse my wife uses.

Are you sure you didn't mean to type www.democraticunderground.com in your web browser? I always thought that was the home for the thought police and the chronically offended.

It's different things for different people. That's part of the problem with AA is that they insist all other methods are wrong. Some folks absolutely need the structure of AA, some people don't, and for some people (people like Stan's dad in SP, people that will grasp any excuse for their own powerlessness) it's the worst idea in the world. I'm glad AA exists and I'm glad it helps as many people as it does, but the idea that there is no other way to get rid of destructive behavior is simply silly, that's the one part of AA that desperately needs to change. Other recovery organizations tend to work as a partnership, they try to recognize the people that they can't help and direct them to somebody else; AA's mentality that everybody else is wrong in the long run could be hurting people.

Watching South Park and and complaining about being offended is like going to a strip club and being surprised that there are naked people.

The man speaks the truth.

The tragic part, is that the kind of people on this thread that are upset about it don't seem to get that they are a large part of what makes the joke funny. If they weren't offended, it wouldn't be nearly as funny.

I admire people who can still get offended. I'm weary of those who say "oh well I guess there are all sorts of points of view and all sorts of people blah blah blah.."

Can his DVR be programmed to unwind his brain at a different hour than the one he stated?

SP episodes primarily aim their satire at liberals because they are so easily offended....this thread is proving conservatives are apparently just as thin skinned.

You admiration fuels SP to direct their focus to yoru types.

Yes, and usually Freepers make fun of them because the people who are offended are liberals.
