Rabies immune globulin is given once, preferably into the bite site, on the day of the exposure..

The vaccine is given on day 0, days 3,7,14,28.

Instead of 21 daily shots it is 6 shots spaced over a month.

TNR doesn't prevent rabies or any other diseased animal from spreading its sickness...

It does drastically reduces the feral cat population, however...

Our county's animal control refuses to accept feral cats and refers you to a private organization for TNR. The private organization puts you on a TNR waiting list because of "too much demand and not enough funds". Local vets will not take feral cats. Effectively this means the feral cat population here continues to grow exponentially.

Without a baseball bat, I agree.

However, with a "Louieville Slugger", "screaming rabid cat" equals EX-"screaming rabid cat".

Rabies is a death warrant, this cat should have been immediately destroyed in place.

Don't "call somebody", DO something, (kill the RABID cat, before it's bite KILLS someone).

"City folks" sure are weak and lame, sometimes.

We've been through this series of arguments many times in the last year following the debate in WI over a varmint season for feral cats. According to long term studies in wildlife biology out of UW, they figure that they have over 65 cats/acre in rural areas and domestic cats are responsible for the majority of small mammal and avian mortality - for kicks, not food. Seems to me that a bounty on cats would be just the ticket. BTW, I own a great cat myself and he's kept indoors.

LOL! That reminds me of a time when I was a kid. We had this kinda flaky cat named Ripples. I wanted to see what would happen if I put a clothespin on her tail. My mom was laying on the couch. The results were NOT pretty!

We had to bathe the cat (the momma) as she got older (she died at 18) and after the last of the kittens died, because she was unable to clean herself. She made this pitiful mournful sound, but getting her all wet and soapy was hilarious. Cat necks are only about as big as a couple of fingers (at best), and the head is this huge thing. She didn't much care for all the laughter. We'd get all the matted crap out of the fur, really clean her up, then rinse her, dry her with a towel (so she wouldn't mess up the house as she shook out), then let her wander around. She'd shake out, including each of her legs separately, then sit down on the lino and give herself a very thorough cat bath. And she'd fume the rest of the day.

When I was young I lived in a city neighborhood. There was a rabid squirrel that chased children one day. As soon as the Dads came driving in from work that night, the squirrel was shot and disposed.

They were men back then.

I think only mammals can get rabies.

I agree.

This entire thing makes me think, (and laugh out loud), about Jimma, the pee-nut, Caartear's response to the infamous "attack of the swimming rabid rabbit"!

It's NOT really funny, because rabies is almost 100% fatal, it's more like pitiful.

What a bunch of "pansies".

When I was a child, a very long time ago, I was taught that we humans have the ultimate responsibility for our animals.

I was NOT to have a dog, or a cat, if I, (myself), could not honor them by doing the terrible tasks required to keep these animals from misery.

No person should dishonor their friends/"pets" by failing to put them down in a humane manner when that terrible time comes.

I have done many hard things in my life, but finishing off my long term relationships with my beloved animals, when they NEEDED me to relieve them of their misery, were the hardest things I have ever done.

It is not hyperbole to say I'd rather shoot a man, than a dog or cat. (Because I know that the dog, or cat, is completely innocent and loves me more than life itself.)

But we are duty bond to do what must be done.

That is the hard part of having, and loving, animals.

There is no joy in it, it is a burden of duty, of love.

Nice Kitties BTW.

I agree, I feed a total of 8. I have four of my own in the house and 4 deck cats. I put a dog house on the deck for them with hay. I have a cat house. I am forever up to my ears in cat litter and food. I am going to die an old cat lady!

I have had four cats at one time. I am down to one. My cats have never killed just for kicks. Also, my cats are indoor/outdoor cats. They live in the house, but can go outside if they wish. I live in the country and they have a lot of land around here. They did not roam, however.

I don't believe that survey for one. For another, if it is true, that is animal behavior. Snakes kill birds by eating the eggs. Why don't we exterminate snakes? I hate snakes. Other species can take care of rodents and bugs. Makes just as much sense to me as exterminating cats.
