FR Folding@Home Project Update -- We're in the Top 120 teams with 5 Million points
Stanford University's Folding@Home Stats page ^ | 4-15-06 | soccer_maniac

Time for a new FreeRepublic folding@home thread.

Our FreeRepublic team of 300+ members comprised primarily of Free Republic members in good standing have banded together to donate their excess CPU cycles to a worthy cause. Via distributed computing, millions of computers around the world, contribute directly to scientific research, in the quest for a greater understanding of diseases such as Alzheimer's, Cancer, and Mad Cow (BSE).

Currently, the team is in 117th place (with 1,038 active CPUs - 29,000 completed Work Units and more than 5,000,000 points).

This is an entirely voluntary program, and if you want to learn more, please see the links posted below (or read one of the previous 16 folding threads)

A new member today would need 1,111 points to get in the top 250 on the FR team. Wow! We have an amazing team!!

Bump! Took my other, slower computer a while to finish its last work unit, but it finally got in there.

Klutz, any chance you can add a few more available CPUs?

As a team, we've hit peak performance in February.

We can't seem to get to 50,000 points/day - we're stuck in the 47-48K range.

"We have an awesome team but we need more members. I would ask all FR members reading this thread to consider joining us."

Gladly. Just re-write the client... I will not waste another moment trying to install it, or more accurately, trying to un-install it after wasting a straight few hours of trying to run it unsuccessfully.

I am not the only one with roughly intermediate computer skills who has been infuriated by the effort. It is simply false advertizing - the way that "BOINC" presents itself as easy.

It was some time ago that I tried, and I am still seriously annoyed that nothing has changed.... and so I spitefully leave my computer on now, doing absolutely nothing.

Don't blame me, Berkeley - I tried helping you guys, and you only screwed me for it.

Folding@Home is run by Stanford U (not Berkeley) and in all honestly takes 3 minutes to install & run.

Sorry to hear you had a bad experience with it.

I've been able to get it installed and operational in minutes on 10 of the 12 machines I've attempted. The two machines it doesn't run on are flakey anyway.

Not clear to me how you were "screwed", though.

I've never run BOINC, but I know some people that do, and the consensus is that it is extremely easy. I'm thinking the problem may not be either package (BOINC or FAH) but the equipment.

HAH! That is simply just too funny!

I run both BOINC and FAH. BOTH are extremely simple to install.
...and I'm sure both Stanford and Berkley are amused with your being "screwed" by them.

If you need help installing either program, just ask. There are people here, people at both sponsoring sites, people all over the world that would love to help you... just ask
...rather than "spitefully" running away pouting.

The FRiendly group of FReepers are more than glad to help you and anyone else get up and running. If you don't want to post the issue/problem in an open forum just FReepmail some of the people and you'll be up and running faster than Bill Clinton can pull down his zipper.

Take a look at some of the earlier threads and you'll see we've walked thru some very complex issues with others. And as others have pointed out,"folding" isn't related to BONIC at all.

Yup. We have more than 250 members over 1000 points and we are about to have 100 members over 10,000 points.

Hmmmm just a thought ....are there any freepers with a contact at the Reagan Library? Maybe we could get the library to publicize the team on their literature. also how about any our all Reagan websites or blogs?
