The Rules: You beat me to it!

My plan for when my daughter gets to this age:

1)Buy human silhouette paper target
2)From about four feet away, shoot tight group in forehead, tight group in crotch
3)Write "150 Yards" on silhouette
4)Hang silhouette in office
4)When kid comes to pick up daughter, bring him to office to show him my gun collection, see if he notices silhouette...........

While cleaning a breakaway double barrel large bore shotgun and looking through the barrels from the breech to see just how clean they are as you say firmly; "You will drive within the law, behave as a Gentleman with my daughter and have her home on time?" Then snap the double barrel closed after he meekly utters Yes then and only then do you respond with a smile and a hearty GOOD!

Oh yes almost forgot do it while he's waiting nervously for your daughter to make her entrance followed by her mom who just had to help with those all important final girlie details.

Weeelllll;

As the first one came in the door I said Hi and that it must be good to be his age. Then I reminded him that I was once his age and knew what he was thinking.

I then asked how fast he could run. With his puzzled look I pointed at my gun case and said "Not fast enough, remember that!"

The word must have gotten around. Now the young men who come to my door (nobody honks from the street) come in and chat with me while they wait for one of their dates.

I remember when I first dated Mr. Mo1

My one brother took him aside and simply said (in his most heavy Philly accent) ..

If you hurt my sister, I will hurt you and if I (brother) can't do it, I have plenty of friends that can

Mr. Mo1 still remembers that to this day *L*

although he's a little too much into love of his car

Tell him to give you the keys. When he returns your daughter, you'll be waiting to return his keys. Let him use your phone to call a cab.

Is it a new Mustang his parents bought for him?

Is it one of those obnoxious rice burners?

Or is it a '70 Nova with an engine he rebuilt himself?

The Nova kid is probably ok.

Seriously, I would ask him what he had on him that was most valuable to him. (class ring, iPod, etc)

Explain to him how valuable your daughter is.

Then ask him to leave his valuable with you for the evening. And if he returns your daughter in good condition, he can expect the same from you.

I read an article recently that discussed this issue in great detail. http://www.nogreaterjoy.org/index.php?id=75&tx_ttnews[tt_news]=237&tx_ttnews[backPID]=3

The authors key tactic was to take the prospective suitor for an informal walk, disarm him with a few inoccous questions then drop the hammer.

"When was the last time you looked at pornography?" If the kid stammers and turns red, tell him that he is an unnaceptable date for your daughter and send him on his way. If he says that he had a problem with that but with God's help he was able to break the habit a year or better before that, he is still in the running, but needs to be careful.

It was actually a pretty good article and more shocking than the shotgun cleaning technique.

Definitely!!! Great yardstick to measure by.

By the time they are 17, kids already know their rights and responsibilities, or should have anyway. You can't do much to influence this young man at this stage of the game, but if you have done your duty as a parent, you should trust her judgement in her choice of dates. It can't hurt for you to vocalize the rules and expectations you have of her, just for the record, but then you should tell her to have a good time tonight. The prom is very special to young girls. Just make sure she has a cell phone with her, and let her know that if she is in a situation that makes her uncomfortable, you will come get her, no questions asked, and be grateful that she calls you.

One more thing: Being proud of his car is not necessarily a bad thing. My oldest was very proud of his first car, and it was just an old jalopy that he and his dad worked on together. But he worked hard to earn that car and had good reason to be proud of it.

A girl's dad once gave me a very enlightening speech. It went like this:

I served in the infantry for thirty years, including Vietnam. If you do not have my daughter home by 10:00, I will kill your a--.

I took him at his word and had her home by 9:00.

Just my two cents...

If you've done a good job with raising your daughter, it won't matter what you say or don't say to the young man on prom night. You will just embarrass your daughter and make the young man uncomfortable. I would suggest just being friendly and getting to know him a little bit. And making sure he is clear on when you expect them home and that drinking is NOT acceptable.

If your daughter has problems in this regard, then there is little you can do to solve them by interrogating this prom date, because there are plenty of other less visible "dates" that you are unaware of...

I'd concentrate more on the talk to your daughter than to the boy.
