Verizon Wireless Products May Depress Apple Shares To Bargain Level: Analyst
Financial Post ^ | October 06, 2007 | Jonathan Ratner

Posted on 10/06/2007 11:02:28 PM PDT by Swordmaker

Verizon Wireless unveiled four new phones for the holiday shopping season, one of which is being called a potential iPhone killer. The Voyager, which is made by LG and goes on sale Nov. 18, will have a touch screen and full-sized QWERTY keyboard revealed when it is flipped open.

Despite its two screens, and positioning as both cheaper and faster than Apple Inc.'s iPhone, the Voyager probably doesn't pose a major threat, says RBC Capital Markets' Mike Abramsky. However, he does think it may slow customer defections from Verizon. Verizon will also be selling a new BlackBerry Pearl, the Venus from LG, and Samsung's Juke, a music phone that opens like a switchblade.

The analyst points to early reviews that suggest Voyager's browser may offer less than the iPhone's, the design is not as stylish, it is bulkier, and it doesn't have iTunes, of course. Any volatility that comes as a result of this competition could present a opportunity for buying Apple shares, Mr. Abramsky wrote in a note to clients. He continues to rate the stock at "outperform."

It won’t be lonely, what with all the iPod killers.

LG is definitely my preferred brand of cell phone hands down. I have found their offerings to be both cheaper, and of better quality than any of the competition.

Did you notice that the writer did not quote or name the analyst? And that all the people quoted in the article contradict the title??

Ratner appears to be an MS shill.

Wife and I went into a Verizon store yesterday, checking their prices on phones and plans as our contract with Sprint is up the end of this month and we want to switch to a lower price point.

Verizon’s stuff looked very tech-cool, but their phones and their plans are all WAY too high. We also went to the Cingular/AT&T store and outside of the rollover thing, there was ZERO difference between them and Verizon in pricing. Of course, AT&T does sell the awesomely cool Iphone, which costs more than we can afford to spend.

Then we went to Alltel and saw very cool phones, awesome features (they have the live TV, verizon doesn’t have it in our area and Cingular wants 15 more dollars a month than Alltel does for the same TV) and they have the lower price point we were looking for. This coming Friday we will be hooking up with Alltel.

I've had the same LG phone for about the last 3 years. It's a good phone, and I've got 3 "extra life" batteries that I rotate. Those batteries are good for about 4 days each of idle time, and about 3 solid hours of talk time. I'm afraid that I'm going to have to get a new phone before too long though, because accessories are getting pretty rare.

I would like to go with Alltel, but it is not in the Chicago area yet.. So we are stuck with At&t, Verizon, T-Mobile, Sprint, and US Cellular...

Sounds like all one has to do is buy four different phones and carry them simultaneously to get the same functions. Apple is DOOMED, doomed I say.

I think the analyst cited in this article is correct. If AAPL has a correction in the near future it should be regarded as a buying opportunity. AAPL has had quite a run up in the last six months. It is due for a correction and any number of things, including introduction of this phone from Verizon, may trigger that correction. But the long term outllook for Apple is so bright it hard not to be extremely bullish on the stock. And in the grand scheme of things the iPhone is not the primary reason to bullish on Apple. The iPhone is important, but the growing market share of the Mac is the real reason to buy and hold AAPL long term,

I don’t know if you travel very much (I do) and I tend to find Alltel and Verizon are by far the best. It does you no good to have a slightly cheaper plan and no connection. BTW, Whoever Alltel uses in Chicago as the roaming partner is fine. I get great connections in Chicago on both Alltel and Verizon phones.

Boy Steve Jobs must be worried /sarc

Aren't the anlysts getting a little tired of labeling everything that comes out an iPod or iPhone killer. With all these lethal toy floating around one might think Apple would've copped it by now.

Guess we'll have to wait and watch.

I for one will continue to listen to my iPod whilst typing to FR on my Macbook and I won't be holding my iBreath.

That assumes that Verizon can keep their network functioning:
