Help!

Came home last night. Turned on the trusty computer and up came a long message, white on black saying: We apologize for the inconvience but Windows did not start successflly... with several option to start.

None of them work.

It then loops to the windows xp screen

Then to an ad for the mainboard

then to a scan devices screen

then to some sort of listing

This morning there was a listing that on each line named had a number of the programs I run at the end of each line. It has not come up this time.

The hard disk comes on for the main board screen and the listing screen

Yes. Write down anything you can see it doing wrt fixing errors. It is no important at this time, but can aid in the diagnosis, and might be useful if this turns into a file recovery issue.

I wasn’t able to figure out what was happening from your post

When you try to boot Windows XP, exactly what do you see? It sounded like you were booting Safe Mode.

Do you have any message concerning files or clusters recovered?

finished checking [...] Now what??

Good. The problem is probably not in the hard drive.

Just for giggles, remove the CD, type EXIT, and hit enter. The machine will either shut off or reboot. Either way, let it try to boot normally. Any joy?

I will add, that my initial reaction was geared towards cetain keywords: Loop; Ad; Listing...

Any time (these days) your computer acts in a manner that is unfamiliar, or not "normal" you must consider nefarious forces at work. This at least is my security conscious mind set.

It could very well be hardware issues at play, but until other possibilities are ruled out; the Devils Advocate should be in the back, if not the forefront, of your mind.

Now these are predicated on certain assumptions based upon the limited information provided. Some of those assumptions are (and forgive me if they are incorrect): You're running Windows; you're running IE; you're system account has Admin privledges; You have Java, and Java Script turned on; you have little or no firewall protections; multiple people in your household use the same account...

You gotta’ love the “I need tech help” ping at FReerepublic.

It’s like calling the cops, because a passed out drunk is parked on your front lawn...and the National Guard shows up! LOLOLOLOLOL

Yes, well, better the Nat'l Guard, than a cop you called off his donut run. :)

No offense to our FReeper boys/girls in blue.
