A hip rock band that features the Soviet national anthem and communist-inspired lyrics was on stage to open for Democratic presidential candidate Barack Obama at his record-breaking Portland, Ore., rally that attracted 75,000. The Decemberists, a Portland-based group with a large local following, also closed the May 18 event. The Decemberists typically begin their concerts with a Russian-language recording of the USSR's national anthem. A YouTube video shows the Decemberists beginning an April 31, 2007, concert at Messiah College in Grantham, Pa., with the anthem.

Nice
In a YouTube video, Decemberist lead singer Colin Meloy endorsed Barack Obama in an unfinished song with communist-style lyrics that begin, “Barack Obama. Alas, Barack Obama. His prophetic luminescence, it will shatter the putrescence and complacency of the bourgeoisie. ”
And people are actually voting for Obama in droves. Scary! A communist is on his way to becoming President of the USA and the most powerful man in the world.
Yet another commie atrocity. There shall be blood in the streets before this thing is done. Bring it on!
There were two revolutions in 1917, one in the spring and one I would have thought was in October. I’m sure the term “Decemberists” makes sense in terms of commie history, but I can’t quite figure it out. Anyone here know?
"The band's name refers to an 1825 revolt over the Imperial Russian succession (Decembrist revolt) It is not related to the Bolshevik Revolution of 1917."
Thanks!
In December of 1825 in St. Petersburg, Russia, a group of military officials staged a revolt against Tsar Nicholas I. These rebels were liberals who felt threatened by the new ruler’s conservative views. They were, however, defeated by the tsar’s forces. As a result of this revolt, Nicholas I implemented a variety of new regulations to prevent the spread of the liberal movement in Russia.

Wonder what the mythical significance of this is to the Che T-shirt wearing, Impeach Bush crowd is? It must be some part of some kook lefty folklore.
LOL.
Is it wrong of me to confess to listening to these guys and owning 3 of their cds?
They’re a band, quirky as all get out, largely acoustic, with a theatrical edge to them. And the occasional anti-war reference comes out. As with many, some songs are better than others.
Just thought a dissenting voice needed to be heard before the band is thrown under the bus for their (supposed) crimes.
John Fogerty? Willie Nelson? Donald Fagen? The same applies. Just shut up and sing and we'll enjoy the music.
Not wrong of you at all to have their albums.
I love them as well. Definitely one of the more lyrically creative bands of recent history and they put on one hell of a show.
Besides any band that mentions Fairport Convention as a touchstone for part of their sound is all right by me.
There *are* a lot of good artists with lefty points of view - I’m guilty as well. For example I’m a longtime Emmylou Harris fan, and she’s been involved with any number of wingnut causes (although now she seems to be focusing on local animal shelters in Nashville so that’s OK).
You’re among friends here, DMZ, you can confess ALL of your sins LOL.

You know - I KNEW a Freeper was actually the one who wrote these lyrics! (What do mean its not satire?)
They’re my girlfriend’s favorite band, so I hear them a lot. Mostly ballads and sea-chanties(16 Military Wives gets on my nerves though). Even saw them live at the Hollywood Bowl, where they did NOT begin with the Soviet anthem. Not my cup of tea generally, but they’re not Rage Against The Machine either.

Gramsci ping!
Quit pickin’ on that white-hating commie traitor, you racists. ;’)
