Wanted: 1 home, giant fridge, bushels of cat litter
Philadelphia Inquirer ^ | July 29, 2008 | Dan Lieberman

PHILADELPHIA -- There are fat cats and then there are fat cats.

South Jersey, to be sure, has seen its fair share of the indictable variety, but never before has it seen the likes of the portly pussycat found waddling in Voorhees.

Meet Princess Chunky -- all 44 pounds of her and just two pounds shy of the 1987 Guinness World Record for overweight cats.

Camden County Animal Control Officer Jim McCleery got the call Friday. There was a stray cat prowling on a patio in the Ashley Run condominium development.

"We picked him up and I knew from the get-go it wouldn't fit in the regular cat carrier, so we had to put him in a dog carrier ... it was a big cat, the biggest one this year," said McCleery, of the Camden County Joint Municipal Animal Control Program.

Employees at Camden County Animal Shelter called the feline "Captain Chunk." Realizing she was female, the name was quickly changed to "Princess Chunk." Her "foster mom" -- shelter volunteer Deborah Wright -- calls her "Princess Chunky."

As the shelter seeks to find the feline's owner, Princess Chunky is now in "foster care" at Wright's Sicklerville home. She is fed only wet and dry cat food.

Wright is trying to develop an exercise routine for the orange and white, short-haired domestic cat, estimated to be about 4 years old.

I’m not PETA member, by far, but that is ridiculous to let a pet get that fat.

Stray cat.

Was hitting every cat bowl in the Condos.

Or so it seems.

May have been some fast food dumpster diving too.

“Anderch said the shelter does euthanize unclaimed pets — 26.4 percent of the 10,500 brought to the shelter last year — but in Princess Chunky’s case, Anderch said she is sure that she will survive and have a good home.”

Ha! You see, sometimes being fat DOES pay off!

A relative of mine has a cat that weighs in the upper 20’s and it is already outrageously fat. The odd thing is that the owner is somewhat anorexic herself.

Our big boy Livingston is somewhere in the 28- to 30-pound range. He’s fat, but he’s not grossly fat...if he was slimmed down he’d still be over 20 pounds. Maine Coons are big cats, and he’s a bit bigger than average for the breed. Gorgeous, too, but dumber than a box of rocks. Then again, when you look as good as he does, you don’t need brains.

As my wife said this morning, (read about this in the Detroit News) don’t you think the owner would have noticed a 44# kitty not at home?

Well he or she doesn’t have to buy a side of beef every couple of weeks to feed tubby.

Put that cat on the Atkins diet (or some form of a raw diet), quickly! She's obviously been eating too many carbs.

Sorry, but there's just no good excuse for a cat to get that fat. Holy Toledo!

Thanks S&A and hwp. I heard a broadcast yesterday about shelters becoming crowded with animals from those who have experienced foreclosures. And the new bad news, horses are
being brought in. Sad.
