Thought For Today: Edmund Burke
The Portable Edmund Burke ^ | 1771 | Edmund Burke

Posted on 11/06/2008 6:24:23 PM PST by Nichevo

the following is taken from the "Speech on Middlesex Elections" given to the House of Commons in 1771

"That the people should not choose their own representative is a saying that shakes the constitution: that this House should name the representative is a saying which, followed by practice, subverts the constitution. They have a right of electing; you have a right of expelling: they of choosing; you of judging, and only of judging, of the choice. What bounds shall be set to the freedom of that choice? Their right is prior to ours: we all originate there. They are the mortal enemies of The House of Commons (substitute Congress), who would persuade them to think or act as if they were self-originated magisteracy, independent of the people, and unconnected with their opinions and feelings. Under a pretense of exalting the dignity, they undermine the very foundations of this House. When the question is asked here, 'What disturbs the people?' 'Whence all the clamor?' We apply to the treasury bench, and they tell us it is from the efforts of libellers, and the wicckedness of the people; a worn out ministerial pretense. If abroad the people are deceivedd by popular, within we are deluded by ministerial cant."

It would appear that Pelosi, Reid, Emanuel, and the RINOs are not familiar with Burke.

completely familiar

Insidious instigators ignobly inveigling ignorant indigents. (and a few others)

"Well I've opened up my veins too many times

And the poison's in my heart and in my mind

Poison's in my bloodstream, poison's in my pride

I'm after rebellion, I'll settle for lies" (BOC)
