Just curious,, what are the better brands of ammunition?

Just want to know if the cheaper brands of ammo are OK. Been hearing some mixed things about American ammo. Any feedback is helpful. 45 cal and 12 gauge and 7.62 are a few rounds I enjoy,, but I have some experience with others. I know more about handguns than I do rifles. Never hunted but am thinking about it for next year. Always wanted a good lever action hunting rifle. Any suggestions there as well?

Ooo, that’s bad; thanks for the heads-up. Did it lodge far enough in to allow the next round to load? That’s when really bad things happen i.e. damaged barrel.

"Why would a box of Remington 7.62 X 39 be different from a box of Remington 7.62 X 39 from someplace else?"

It isn't. It is made from the same raw materials, same processes, same specifications and same workers. That is also true of the other manufacturer's promotional brands.

Speer markets three different lines of ammo ("Blazer Brass", "Independence" and "Lawman" that differ only in the packaging artwork. Same for Federal and "American Eagle". Same with Winchester and "USA". Same with Remington and "UMC". Get the picture?

Buy a major American brand by price for best ammo and results.

“A local gunsmith, a man who actually makes his living repairing weapons, told me to avoid the ammo they sell at WalMart. He said a lot of his customers have had trouble with it.”

He actually makes his living repairing weapons and he didn’t tell you which brands to avoid, he only told you which non union store to not buy them at?

If you are thinking of cost, DRY FIRE. You can do it in the front room, the bedroom or on the back porch. You can do it when it’s 30 degrees and snowing hard, sunny and warm or when it’s raining cats and dogs. Practice in the dark more often than in the bright light. You can do it with a .22 derringer, a .50 caliber Barrett and every weapon in between.

Ninety five percent of shooting is position or stance, how you hold the weapon, breathing, concentration on the target (being able to block out the noises around you) and how you squeeze (not pull) the trigger. You don’t need a bullet coming out the barrel to tell you if that shot will hit what you are aiming at.

If you are practicing with a handgun, practice drawing from the holster for every shot. Bringing the weapon up to the “ready” position is 99% of the task. If you fumble your draw, you will lose the game, guaranteed! So practice the most important part the most often.

That is the most hilarious thing I have ever heard. Sounds exactly like a big media response ... slightly slanted (understatement)and without any logicality to the statement, Obvious a WalMart hater. sheeeeesh .... and people like that want us to think they are credible????

“Obvious a WalMart hater.”

Precisely my thought upon reading that response as well.

...the ammo they sell at WalMart.

Remington, Winchester, Federal? Avoid those brands? And Wal-Mart has the best distruibution system in the country, so I don't think it's been sittin' around for long. Sounds like anti-Wal-Mart BS.

I've heard that Serbian Privi Partisan ammo is pretty good and can usually be found at a decent price, but haven't tried any yet. Does anyone know from personal experience?

It is reliable (no failures yet), but not quite as accurate as I would like (shooting 55 grain out of a 1/9 twist the groups are about twice as large as what I can achieve with my stash of Lake City). So far I've tried three batches (one was actually branded "Monarch" from a local Academy, but it is manufactured by Privi Partisan) with consistent results.

I would use something else for competition, but it is decent ammo for training or plinking.

The Monarch was what I saw at the Academy store. It’s not really cheap, but the FMJ and the soft point were the same price, so I thought I might try some of the soft point. About a month ago, Gander Mt. had Lake City XM193 for $7.50 box/20. Should have bought more!
