I'm looking to buy a 12ga, autoloader/semi-auto 12ga, and I'm needing some sage advice.
I've read that the US Military has used these. Beyond that, I know zip about shotguns, except that I have my Grandpa's 10ga, single barrel, cracked stock, which hasn't been fired in 50+ years. (A gunsmith is going to work that piece long before I ever do. It's a "mantle-hanger", for now.)
Can anyone offer me some firsthand experience, or opinions on some units to try/buy?
Price? I'd like to stay under $1,000 if possible, including sight, case, cleaning kit, 500rnds.
Relentlessly reliable.
Ditto! No problems with my M1-90...
The Benelli M4 would be my choice. My first temptation would be to go with one in basic black. But my walls are white and beige and I’m not sure whether desert camo might actually be less visible indoors in low light conditions. More research needed.
I have an 1100 now, and it’s place in my home is secure. The Remington shotguns have one great advantage over most others in that there are millions of them in circulation, making parts hugely available. That makes thm easy to specialize for most any purpose. They are also highly reliable with even minimal care and maintenance. An 1100 with a 10-round mag is a fearsome weapon
The only name brand way under $1000 is the Mossberg 930.
Even mentioning a hacksaw is incredibly bad advice.
What do you want to do with it? Hunt, shoot targets or for home protection?
Mr. Piper;
Your advice is excellent.
My primary home defense weapon is the Remington Model 870 Marine Magnum. Back up is a Ruger .357 Magnum DA revolver.
Buy a Mossberg or Remington. Either brands are readily available, rock solid and reasonably priced. A second barrel will only run 150 or less and can be changed in 30 seconds.
I have a Mossberg 9200 autoloader and 2 barrels. A 24 inch rifled slug barrel and an 18.5 smooth bore riot barrel. I added a side saddle(5 rounds on the stock) a flashlight and a laser. Works for hunting and any other need that may arise.

LOL, gunbroker has 1 on their website...I guess they ARE rare!
That's all that matters. I once won a $20.00 bet against some steroid necked SWAT type. He said "Shotguns are obsolete. With my MP-5 I can beat any shotgunner."
I bet him I could put more holes in a target faster than he could. He could use his MP-5, and I'd use a civvy legal firearm of my choice.
He laughed and said "You're on, old man."
I pulled my Mossberg 500 out of the case, loaded up one round of 000 buck and fired.
"I win."
His buddies laughed their asses off and said "Pay the man. You've been schooled."
I bought myself and my shooting partner a nice breakfast with that 20.

pump, sure! not sure about semi-autos. i got a binelli pump for $430.

If youre getting your scattergun for self defense, Id go for the remington 11-87 police model.
It comes from the factory set up properly for self defense and the last time I priced them they were around 640 bucks out the door.
Based on your criteria, the 11-87 Police model is the way to go for you..or if you could consider a pump, get one of those remington 870 marine magnums.
It is set up to use 23/4 or 3 inch magnum shells, takes 8 rounds, is finished to retard corrosion of you are shooting it in the rain and most of them now seem to have ghost ring sights. This is good if you plan to use slugs and expect to hit anything with them past 40 yards distance.
I also like the saiga 12 someone mentioned, and you can trick it out to look and handle just like a Kalashnikov. Check out www.warriortalk.com for a subforum on the saiga shotguns.
Many thanks, all.
I’ve printed-out your replies and am visiting the links, and printing-outall of them, and using those which my local armorer thinks would be worth investigating.
Of course, he’s got some of those in-stock, and some which weren’t mentioned, and I’ll be evaluating them, too.
So many choices; so little time.
Again, thanks for pointing me in the right direction for my choice and decision.
Glad to help in even a small way. Good luck.
