Hey Freepers on Las Cruces/El Paso area: I'm on PCS orders from CA back to AR and stopping in your area for the night. My honey and I would like some suggestions on some local good eats!
NO CHAIN RESTAURANTS!
We would like either a good steakhouse or the best Mexican food restaurant.

Deming-Cruces is 62 miles. Going to be kinda late when you roll in there. But if some are open for breakfast... Yum!!
I remember a great steakhouse just off of I-10 on the west side of Ft. Stockton Texas. The steak was great and as I was leaving, I noticed a country western singing group had autographed the wall behind the cashier. I can’t remember the name though, but there may not be too many others in that area.

About ten years ago I ate at La Posta. It’s good food. The funny thing is the waitress seemed concerned I couldn’t handle the “heat” like the locals could and recommended a milder meal than I ordered. When I ate it didn’t seem that hot and when I told a cousin later that day (that lived in Las Cruces) she figured they had given me the mild meal anyway. A few days later I had another cousin in Hatch prepare the local style of enchilada and it didn’t seem that bad, either. New Mexican cuisine has the reputation for being much hotter than Tex-Mex, but if the seeds are removed it isn’t that bad.
Goode Company is not a chain. It is owned by Jim Goode, a houstonian who has opened seafood, mexican and bbq restaurants in several locations in houston

Lots of good suggestions already given here. Nellie’s is great, but only open these days for breakfast/lunch. La Posta is best for the classic Old Mesilla experience.

Glad to see this thread! I’m going to Las Cruces in late April for the “Carmina Burana” at NMSU, and some sightseeing and hiking. Gonna be there a week...anyone recommend some good hikes within a 100 mile radius?
Head uphill from Cruces, toward the missile range. When you see a missile beside the highway, turn right. Park the car, start hiking.
PS - bring lots of water.

Sounds like Ruidoso- did the Denny’s look like a 50s diner? If so that is the best Denny’s I ever ate in- Hubby and I spent 4 days there last year and ate several meals there.
We saw the top 10 US Steakhouses on the travel channel and decided to try the El Paso one for Christmas dinner - a real change from turkey...:^)
It was great, melt in your mouth steak and at reasonable prices. A nice family place with a small zoo, and not part of a chain. They grow their own steak.
Full details here - definitely worth a stop if you are on I-10.
The ranch was the location for the movie "Courage Under fire".
We also liked the El Encanto Hotel in Las Cruces.
You can’t travel through El Paso without eating at Gunther’s Edelweiss Restaurant. It’s a family-owned German restaurant that I would stack up against any German restaurant in the U.S. Take a moment and google it and you’ll find great reviews as well as directions. On my last trip to El Paso, it was the best meal I had there.
Cloudcroft is a lovely place, I would love to retire there. It still feels like a small town.

If you like hot, we tried some chili beer for New Years Eve. It was HOT!
There’s a Denny’s in Ruidoso?? Where is it?
It’s out on Highway 70, technically it is in the part of town or seperate town of Ruidoso Downs- it looks like a polished metal 50s diner and when we were there they had fantastic food- just great cooks I guess because the menu was the same as other Denny’s of course- but the food was way better.
We ate at Famous Dave’s in El Paso about a month ago and it was great. There may be more than one but we ate at the one on Mesa.
