I wonder what the projected MEAN TIME BEFORE FAILURE is?

NEVER assume that it's anything more than zero!. I had a WD freeagent 500G drive that crashed in less than a month. At these prices, buy 2 or 3 drives just for backup. If the information is really important, keep a copy off-site.

Yeah. I have umpteen redundant HD’s and a flock of flash drives including a couple 8Gig.

I also have an online/net based backup subscription service.

My main beef is that none of the systems I know of . . . including Microslop’s Live One Care

backsup all the settings and desktop routinely.

How can I solve that functionally?

I’ve forgotten . . .

Most drives are the cheap ________________ variety but which break down sooner.

An ?older? format variety of drive _______________?

is more expensive but takes significantly longer to break down on average.

What is that 2nd type HD?

What do you recommend about that?

Have lots of cheap ones redundantly backed up or have one of the more expensive older types as well?

Mean time before failure has been used for around 60 years. Average time usually in hours before something fails. It is not uncommon for electronics to fail with in 90 days. Brand new equipment often has a higher failure rate than year old equipment. The item with manufacturing flaws fail quickly and the good stuffs last.

It’s a dead end. Who would want really big hard drives like this? Google says the PC is dead and everyone will be keeping their data at Google.

I got some data Google can have. [ insert jpg of tense forearm and hand with raised middle finger ]

you could backup the whole internet to your computer.

Except that you didn't allow for the fact that now that 2TB drives are available, the internet is now 33% larger. ;-)

Don't know,...Newegg doesn't have any yet it seems...just looked.

the WD 1 T go for 109 and 200...not sure what the difference is...maybe a different electronic package and /or testing.

So maybe double that ...would be a guess...

Masybe they are aiming at commercial sales initially.

THANKS.

It’s been several years since I used Ghost.

I had some very serious problems with it. Really fouled some things up and cost me dozens and dozens of man hours.

I don’t recall specifically what the problems are. It NEVER lived up to my expectations by any stretch of the imagination and really was a huge headache.

I gather you are saying it’s fine now and does the bit about saving settings and desktop?

Sounds good. But I’ve been burned sooooooooooooooooo many times sooooooooooooo outrageously by Norton, I doubt I’ll use them again in this lifetime.

The only software company I think is more destructive to sanity and welfare and wallets is Microslop.

2 Tera-byte drive doesn't impress me. The drive is 7500 rpm which is old technology. I would be impressed with a 12,000 rpm drive sold under $100.

A drive like this isn't used for transactional work where high rpm shines. People will use it to hold lots of big files, where platter density matters more than rpm. But you're getting close on a cheap high-rpm drive. Newegg has a 73 GB 15,000 rpm for $140. I don't think anybody makes 12,000 rpm drives though.
