Athlete: Coach Made Me Drink Blood
NBC New York ^

Posted on 09/21/2009 3:53:19 PM PDT by nickcarraway

A former athlete at Central Connecticut State University has filed a lawsuit against the school and a retired track coach, making some pretty alarming allegations that the coach harassed him for three years, reports the New Britain Herald.

Charles Ngetich, a Kenyan, claims he was forced to drink blood, among other things during his time on the track team, the New Britain Herald reports. Ngetich lost his full scholarship, and was dismissed from school on Sept 4 because he could not pay outstanding school fees, the paper reports.

The suit alleges:

- he was encouraged to drink a cup of blood in front of team members because the coach had seen a documentary mentioning that Kenyan tribes engaged in ritual blood-drinking;

- he was also given an entire bottle of blood to drink;

- teammates pointed to a puppy and asked how many people he could feed with the animal;

- and he was pressured to change his major to engineering because there's no use for a math degree in Africa According to court documents, Ngetich filed the case on Sept. 14.

His lawsuit alleges that he has been reported to the U.S. Immigration and Naturalization Service and is in the country on a student visa, became clinically depressed because of the incidents, and his athletic and academic performances suffered as a result.

CCSU released a statement to the paper that said: “Central Connecticut State University views the lawsuit recently brought by a former student-athlete very seriously. Because of our commitment to diversity at CCSU and to ensuring that it is a welcoming place for all, we are especially pained that we cannot comment on this matter... We welcome this process through which all of the facts of the case will come out.”

>> making some pretty alarming allegations

Making allegations is easy. Proving them, not so easy.

This doesn’t pass the smell test.

Forced to drink blood became “encouraged” to drink blood pretty quickly. If true maybe you fire the coach, but if the idiot did it he chose to.

So maybe next game they can dump a bucket of blood on the coach in lieu of Gatorade.

It may well be BS made up to try to stay in the country and get a free ride through college. On the other hand, hazing is not uncommon among US college athletes (and high school, and even younger) and it’s often tacitly condoned by the coaches. There was a high school sports camp a few summers back for some kids form one or more Long Island high schools, and the older boys were stuffing pine cones up the anuses of the younger boys (while the latter were be held down by the some of the other older boys). When word got out and the varsity teams involved got their seasons cancelled, some of their parents were actually complaining that the punishment was too harsh, “boys will be boys” and all that crap. There was evidence that at least some of the coaches were pretty well aware of what was going on in that case.

<he was pressured to change his major to engineering because there’s no use for a math degree in Africa

Puhleeze. The PC types at most universities would have been all over themselves to encourage a math teacher to go back to Africa. Now mathematical theory, that may be another thing, and they could be right about that little use for that in Africa (big stereotyping here, I admit), but then why not encourage him to pursue that over here?

I’m a prof; no one would ever tell a student that there’s no use for a degree - how do you think we get so many Women’s Studies or English majors? : ) This all sounds like booshwah to me. I don’t know any academics who would say this kind of thing to a student.

Don’t know about the blood though; sounds like something some coaches might do.

Two vampires walked into a bar and called for the bartender.

“I’ll have a glass of blood,” said one.

“I’ll have a glass of plasma,” said the other.

“Okay,” replied the bartender, “That’ll be one blood and one blood lite.”

Dracula took a cruise ship across the ocean. While seated in the dining room, the waiter rattled off the day’s menu. Dracula said, “Never mind that, bring me the passenger list.”

It really depends on the breed.

They don't need accountants?

When you are working with billion dollar SMALL notes, someone needs to be able to do math with some really large numbers.
