Price fixing won't solve the problem.

MOSCOW – The price of the cheapest vodka on the Russian market more than doubled Friday as the government set a minimum price in an effort to fight rampant alcoholism.

One would have thought that the first round with the Soviet Union would have taught them well, apparently it didn't and they are going to follow that same road to economic destruction as we are for the first time, again.

Pesky history repeating itself again...

Russia is a morally bankrupt society and they are doomed to failure.

Drinking causes an extraordinary number of deaths in Russia, where male life expectancy is about 60 years, and it contributes to an array of economic and social problems.

Government regulation of life in general has proven to be the root cause of most personal ills of life.

Life, Liberty, and that all but annoying pursuit of happiness personally seems to work the best.

Comrade, if the cheaper stuff is still good, export it all to the US instead!

A truly good potato vodka is getting harder to find. I’m currently buying a Polish brand. Good stuff, BTW.

I’ve got a bottle of Luksusowa in my pantry right now with a couple vanilla beans inside. Now that’s some yummy stuff.

The people that want it will get it... The Russians are experts at making “moonshine”.. which they call “Samigon”. They make it from anything that will ferment.. Actually I have had some that is really good..made from fermented apricots.

I have been in this part of the world for 5 years now, and I have a whole different opinion as to the root cause of so much alcoholism here. It is a cultural thing..nothing to do with hopelessness, or moral bankruptcy, or oppressive government..The Russians just like booze..Period. They toss back straight vodka like we drink beer. Its just what they do and nothing anyone does is going to change it anyways soon. Also even at double the price..its still gonna be cheap by our standards. I still use vodka for windshield washer fluid in the winter..dollar a bottle stuff does the job just fine.

Actually, the present Russia is more Christian than the USA. Putin has even introduced religion teaching to all state schools.

My Russian friend explained to me that Russian vodka production has been consolidated to the point where no matter what Russian vodka you buy, there is no real territorial/traditional distinction between them. The method or the number of times it's been distilled may vary, but it's all essentially the same stuff.

At least that's what they explained to me over vodka.

I am a fan of Russkiya Standart.

Helpful safety tip:Leave Ukrainian Vodka alone, or you'll learn about regrets, things that might have been, and decisions you made that went terribly, terribly awry.....PRAVDA!

Price fixing has led to a lot of “yellow death” in Russia. Otherwise healthy 20 somethings are dying from the cleaning agent used to cut the bootleg vodka. There are pics of it all over the net. Really sad, scary stuff.

My wife swears by Chopin, which is very good, but pricy.

I like Luksusova, which is inexpensive, and a true Polish potato vodka.

However, there’s one made here in the States, Grand Teton, which is pretty good, and is in the middle of the price between Chopin and Luksusova.

I do prefer potato vodka to the other stuff (rice/grain/whatever).

They will make potato vodka like they do here in the states, I have never seen anyone buy as many potato's as the Russian and Ukrainians do.
