In the February issue of Elle UK, Natalie Portman says, "I've always tried to stay away from playing Jews." Then she adds, "I get like 20 Holocaust scripts a month, but I hate the genre." Because the entire interview is not online, I am going to give Portman the benefit of the doubt. I don't think she's a self-loather who doesn't want movie audiences to know she's Jewish (though she benefits from looks that are not stereotypically Semiticher nose is small, her hair is straight). It's more that she's lamenting the lack of good Jewish roles outside of Holocaust movies. There, she has a point.
In the past ten years, I can think of only two non-Holocaust movies in which the female protagonist was explicitly Jewish: Two Lovers and Kissing Jessica Stein. It's worth noting that both these films were independent productions, and that in Two Lovers, Vinessa Shaw's Jewish character was meant to be less attractive than Gwyneth Paltrow's character, who is a shiksa (though in real life both Paltrow and Shaw are at least part Jewish). I literally cannot think of a single major studio picture with a Jewish heroine from the aughtsif you can name one, please list in the comments below. That's certainly something worth complaining about in fashion magazines.
What a fag.
oh, wait.

Don’t like them???
WRITE YOUR OWN ... that’s what EVERYONE ELSE DOES!!!
Oy vey.
“The Galaxy’s 2 worst Senators”
I assume you mean the 2 on the right.
Them thar grapefruits look like falsies. Too perfect as far as nipplage.
Did she say that in that same high nasally monotone voice?
Hilary is desperatly trying to focus on the camera...
Sorry, but I think she is hot. She also signed the pro-Polanski letter, which means she will not have a problem when I slip her a Rohypnol and do some nasty things to her.
Natalie Portman- Guilty. But HRC and Portman, no, not separated at birth.
“Hilary is desperatly trying to focus on the camera...”
Nice.
How (why!) are you supposed to tell (or care!) if somebody is Jewish?
What - Do they need to carry a sign around their neck saying “Hey look at me! I’m Jewish!”
(A few years ago, somebody tried that, you know. A truly religious person doesn’t CARE what religion another person is. Unless that other religion is urgently trying to kill or enslave me.)
*YAWN* I guess you failed the mettle test *YAWN*
I think there is definitely a point to jewish roles being exclusively holocaust or at least exclusively holocaust or jewish to make fun of jews. But that is true of lots of groups of people.
I don’t blame her for choosing not to take part. It probably pays better to avoid those types of roles anyway.
Well she is actually standing next to the Ice Queen. That’s got to have some effect.
V for Vendetta, actually. That movie was so ridiculously leftist it’s comical. It included all their major points: the hatred for western culture, tolerance of terrorism, the plight of gays, the “bring it all down” paradigm, hatred of Christianity but near-adulation of the Koran, and that stupid scene at the end where everyone put on V masks and became this suddenly unstoppable force as if they were all Borg drones following the collective hive-mentality. But liberals actually believe this stuff. It’s comical.
