Pernell Roberts, an original cast member of one of television's classic westerns, "Bonanza," died at his Malibu home Sunday. He was 81.
His death from cancer was confirmed by his wife, Eleanor Criswell.
Roberts was known to fans as the handsome and smart eldest son of the Cartwright clan, Adam. He played the role from its inception in 1959, but tired of the role after six years and left the show to act in films and resume a stage career that had brought him a 1955 Drama Desk Award for best actor in a production of "Macbeth." In 1979, he returned to series television in the popular "Trapper John, M.D.," playing the title character, Dr. John McIntyre, for the show's entire seven seasons.

Soundstage or ranch at North Shore?
Loved that show and he was always the good looking one.....even though we made fun of these 3 grown men still living with Pa.......

At the ranch. Visited it often before it closed. For years when you went in the front door Little Joe’s jacket was hanging on the coat rack. The house was set exactly like you would expect. Fortunately I was able to take the Madettes there before it closed.
Also don’t forget Law and ORder francise
Least NCIS just have one spin off NCIS LA
I forgot that David Canary was on Bonanza - and yes, he’s a very big part of All My Children. It was rumored that he wasn’t going to go to LA when the show moved there, but thankfully that is not the case - he is a great actor! I remember growing up watching Bonanza (and wasn’t it one of the first shows to be shown in color?) and I always looked forward to it....I had a crush on Little Joe....and yes, “Adam’s” death at 81 does indeed make me feel old. RIP
Sounds like those Cartwright Boys may have been seriel killers.
When did it close? I used to live at South Shore (1972) and drove by the ranch everytime I went to Incline Village to party. Never stopped. I regret that.
Right now I’ve got the kids hooked on the fifties historical shows syndicated from Britain. Robin Hood, Sir Lancelot, and their current favorite, William Tell:
Thank you Kart for sharing that. I will print it out and post it in a prominent daily “viewing area”.
Didn't they originally write him off the show by having him living elsewhere as a politician or lawyer? Maybe California? Seems like he may have came back one show after leaving as a regular but I'm not certain.
I remember watching it as a kid. Didn't know it was filmed in color a few seasons till I was an adult LOL.
In our family, he was known as the liberal Cartwright.
“
Bonanza, Cheyenne, Maverick, Have Gun Will Travel...
Now that was the ‘Golden Age’ of TV!
“
It was a better, simpler time.
Well, at least as I remember it...
(And in this PC age, I’ve heard that “Have Gun Will Travel” doesn’t
get aired even on cable because “it’s too violent”. Funny, I don’t
recall Richard Boone throwing as much lead as Jack Bauer!)
RIP.
Hop Sing is still cookin’....somewhere.
Thanks for the Hop Sing update.
The Cartwright family is back at the table somewhere.
