I looked up a Bull Mastiff. It's a very large dog. Sounds like a variation of the Grizzly Man?

Interesting. I did not know that dogs “did” irony.

Where is Chet99 and his cheerleaders to demand the “final solution” for all Bull Mastiffs (and the hundreds/thousands of other large, powerful breeds)?

If a Pitbull can kill you, a Bull Mastiff can bite your head clean off. Better get that legislation started.

Dogs rarely “just snap.” There is usually a long history of abuse leading up to the attack. Dogs are rarely psychotic, and most want nothing more than to be friends.

After his (dog owner) death, an opposition party said the agriculture minister should resign for failing to stop the dogs from being released.

I don't see why. The owner made the decision to fight to keep his dogs. It was his choice. One can't protect everyone from their own bad choices.

Keep this in mind the next time you hear someone blubbering about having to put their dog down. Dogs are animals, not people. Way too many people forget that, apparently including this guy.

Four years ago, the three bullmastiffs attacked and seriously injured a passer-by outside their owner's house. They spent years in custody pending legal hearings, but when one of them attacked a dog handler, authorities ordered them to be put down.

I don't know what a Bull Mastiffs temperament is supposed to be but these three weren't nice doggies.

“I looked up a Bull Mastiff. It’s a very large dog.”

Yes they are. Two things this doctor should have remembered as a dog owner.

1) If you own potentially dangerous dogs, you’d better understand dog training and dog psychology. In particular, you’d better make sure you’re the pack leader.

2) More than one dog in a household is inherently more risky, as you’ll likely see pack behavior. Note how many recent serious attacks have involved several dogs.

Yeah...and 3 years ago, they were owned by the same person. Which supports my statement, that there was most likely abuse going on.

“A Look Back
The Bullmastiff’s known history in England begins around 1860, when they were developed to keep large estates and game preserves free of poachers. Gameskeepers needed a dog that could track quietly, cover short distances quickly and pin and hold poachers without mauling them. The foundation breeding was 60% Mastiff and 40% Bulldog; breeders were hoping to create a dog faster and more aggressive than the Mastiff, yet bigger than and not as ferocious as the Bulldog.”

Well, it’s a man hunter. However, much like firearm designers never created a firearm that had the barrel do a 180 and point at your forehead(ignoring the physics of it), the people who created/bred Bull Mastiffs didn’t envision a dog that randomly killed its owner. There isn’t much point in guarding the Lord’s estate if the Lord was mauled by the hounds 3 months back. So it is what it is...a large, powerful animal, requiring care and dedication to own.

There may have been no abuse but simply the owner didn’t know how to take command of them. They are animals. If the lead dog didn’t respect their owner, he’s kibble. The other dogs will follow what the lead dog does.

Dogs are rarely psychotic

With cats, though, it seems to be common. I've had a couple of cats that were borderline crazy, but my wife had a cat that was as psycho as it gets. This thing was the most ill tempered critter I've ever been around (and I grew up on a farm with a lot of ornery critters). It would growl at you if you just walked by it. It's eyes would dilate and contract rapidly when it got riled. It was possessed. She had to have it's teeth filed and claws removed so that it wouldn't hurt anyone. This was by far the fastest house cat I've ever seen, too. It like to attack your knees for no apparent reason and would do strafing runs on you when it was riled. It was also common for it to come blasting by and take food right out of your hand. Two different vets recommended that it be put down. Both agreed that it just wasn't wired right.

The owner should be the lead dog (pack leader).

I must be slow today (today?).

I’m not catching the oblique statement - so can you help us Clemens-impaired types out and identify the Twain quote to which you are referring?

Thanks!

Yes and he wasn't. He let the 3 form their own pack. Doesn't a pack kill the weakest member? Sounds like that was the owner.
