The Goering who saved Jews: While Hermann masterminded Final Solution, his brother rescued Jews
The Daily Mail (U.K.) ^ | April 8, 2010 | Zoe Brennan

(edit)

By now, the SS knew of Albert's work. From 1939, they kept a file documenting his 'acts of terrorism'. Albert was declared a 'public enemy' of the Third Reich.

An arrest warrant was issued, but his brother Hermann quashed it.

Hearing reports of the atrocities taking place at concentration camps, Albert confronted his brother, who brushed the claims aside. So Albert made his most audacious move of all - driving a convoy of trucks to Theresienstadt concentration camp, where 33,000 prisoners died.

His friend Benbassat says: 'He said: "I am Albert Goering, Skoda Works. I need workers."

'He filled up the truck. The head of the concentration camp agreed because it was Albert Goering. Then he took them into the woods and let them out.'

THIS would be Albert's last intervention during the war. His trail of good deeds was beginning to catch up with him. In August 1944, a wire was sent to Heinrich Himmler by the General of Police in Prague, SS Obergruppenfuhrer Karl Hermann Frank, requesting permission to seize Albert for interrogation.

I had never heard of Albert. There must have been great pressure and temptation to join the Nazi party, but he resisted.

Interesting. Hermann undoubtedly was responsible for plenty of deaths, but was AFAIK in charge of the Luftwaffe, the Nazi air force at the time. Not mkaing excuses, just a point of clarification. He was not particularly involved in the mass murder of Jews as was Heiderich, Mengele, Himmler, and many others.

Great story. A tale of two brothers one wicked and the other good. I had not heard it before.

He was not particularly involved in the mass murder of Jews as was Heydrich, ...

He signed the letter directing Heydrich to smooth the process for dealing with a 'Final Solution'. In response, Heydrich convened the Wannsee conference and got the cooperation of many different governmental agencies in the extermination process.

After Herman Goering was seriously wounded in the Beer Hall Putsch of 1923, he was hidden by two older women [I believe sisters]. They were Jewish. Goering made sure they got out of Germany, and protected them until they did.

Even Hitler saved the Jewish doctor who had treated his mother when she was terminally ill from cancer.

No defense of either of them, but an interesting historical footnote.

Hermann Goering was Hitler’s top aide in the early days, responsible for much more than the Luftwaffe. He was Hitler’s designated successor and, as Reichsmarschall, the highest ranking military figure. Towards the end of the war, he was discredited by the failures of the Luftwaffe and his influence with Hitler declined but there was no break until the very last days of Hitler’s life.

That is a fascinating story. It’s not often that I learn something new about WW2 history.

Albert was Hermann's half-brother. Fanny Goering had an afair with Baron von Epstein, a convert who became the godfather of all the Goering children.
