It has been widely reported that Elvis Presley died in 1977 from cardiac arrhythmia, an irregular heartbeat, possibly brought on by drug dependency, obesity and a weak heart. But the music legend's longtime friend and physician, Dr. George Nick Nichopoulos, has put pen to paper for the first time and revealed his belief that it was chronic constipation that actually killed the King of Rock and Roll.

Chronic constipation goes hand-in-hand with chronic use of opiates. Just FYI.

I’m a little curious why this doctor is just now coming out with this info. Maybe he needs the money.

Overuse of prescription pain killers (or opiates like morphine) will cause constipation.

Apparently, Elvis was a better friend than his doctor was—why even talk about something he knows would’ve embarrassed Elvis? More than we need to know, as it is.

The article says -
"We just assumed that the constipation was secondary to the meds that he was taking for his arthritic pain and for his insomnia.
((snip))
"But bowel paralysis is hereditary and you can in fact pass it down to your children, he continued. His condition was either something he was born with like Hershbergers disease, or some viruses cause the paralysis of the nerves in the colon. The nerves werent functioning enough in places, or werent functioning at all because his colon would not push food out, it would just accumulate.

It is a known fact that using drugs causes severe constipation.

Dr. Nick...You oughta know many Prescription pain medicines, and other narcotics have the side effect of constipation.
Maybe you shouldn't have written all those "scrips", and instead you should put Elvis on a diet of Figs, dates, prune and aloe vera juice.

To: camerongood210
It’s actually an intelligent article, although about a subject that some people might like to make jokes about (and in the article, it says that this was part of the problem for Elvis not treating it properly, medically-speaking... because of not really wanting to talk about it).
The doctor says he would still be alive today if it had been treated the way they wanted to — that is, have an operation to take care of it...
Interesting...
Also, he says it’s a hereditary disease, too...

I thought the doctor said it was a hereditary disease, too... and that if it had been treated with that operation that they wanted to do, Elvis would still be alive today ...
He seemed to indicate that it wasn't the drugs (what was prescribed to him) which were the problems ... [I'm just going by what the doctor says in the article]...

Back when the Elvis commemerative stamp came out the Cincinnati Enquirer had a contrest to design an Elvis stamp. My entry was a fat bloated Elvis sitting on the can with his white jump suit pants down around his ankles. Elvis was slumped over with crossed out eyes and open prescription bottles at his feet. The toiled had the TCB logo on it. The header read “Ladies and Gentlemen ELVIS has left the building!”
The Enquirer never ran my particular entry in print. But I did get a note from the editor telling me that my entry was so funny that it was posted prominently in the news room for all employees to enjoy.
I was proud of that moment.
