Denial of Service Attack on FR?
Alexa Internet Stats ^ | 6/21/2010 | Alexa

Posted on 06/21/2010 5:32:40 AM PDT by sam_paine

"A denial-of-service attack (DoS attack) or distributed denial-of-service attack (DDoS attack) is an attempt to make a computer resource unavailable to its intended users. Although the means to carry out, motives for, and targets of a DoS attack may vary, it generally consists of the concerted efforts of a person or people to prevent an Internet site or service from functioning efficiently or at all, temporarily or indefinitely."

Just asking... Plenty of articles on here lately like the gentleman who painted a sign on a truck in his cornfield, and someone who didn't like the message set it ablaze.

If someone would like to reduce the reach and effectiveness of FreeRepublic 20% in a day or two, why bother with laws and FCC internet control etc. Why not just crash the servers?

I remind you that back in the BBS and Compuserve days we still had to rely on the NY Times and CBS for news. You might even still think that Obama was actually eligible to hold the office he does.

Good post/thread/advice. I couldn’t get on yesterday until late afternoon and it’s very slow today.

Be prepared to rebuild. (Guns, ammo, food, fuel, family, friends, FRiends, network, Constitution)

Why don’t we set up a section by state where FReepers can contact each other? I know that there are FReepers in my area but I have no idea who they are.

IT'S NOT AN OPTION.

Three very good reasons on why it would not work. Could Obama and the LEFT shut down all phone traffic ? (The likely DO have the desire, but I don't think they have the ability, yet.)

None-the-less, in the world BEFORE http, we used Citadel and Fidonet and single line connections. Would several FReepers be able to post 4+ meg pictures of scantily clad women in bathing suits and squander limited bandwidth, like they do now ? Nope.

Such systems like BBS ware and Fidonet still might be worth considering. It might be a good idea that FReepers to have a Bootable CD ready with at least a bootable version of Knoppix on it available.

External 56K FAX/modems are available for $25.00.

That's really the key. All the talk of "stocking up" creates an image in my mind of all of us riding out the collapse of the Constitution, and being well fed and uselessly armed when we wake up isolated and ineffective in a totalitarian tomorrow.

Whoever manages and precipitates the crisis will control the outcome.

Whoever manages and precipitates the crisis will control the outcome.

Those who are prepared for what's to come may likely remain observers.

We don't want the Federal Government to fall, just to revert control back to the individual states.

If we don't make that happen now while the Constitutional framework for it exists, then we're not going to return to it after chaos rules.

I suggest a little education!
http://www.arrl.org/licensing-education-training

Complete information on obtaining your license. It isnot hard as they have removed the Morse Code requirement. As smart as you all are could probably pass the multiple guess theory inside of a month.
I volunteer my time at the EOC of the County performing communications tasks and building a real Ham station in a hardened bunker. We now have a 100’ tower atop a big hill populated with antennas for all bands from DC to light.

I also have an old tube type transmitter/receiver in case of EMP. I believe we are not far from anarchy in the streets. We saw what happened in Iran when things went bad. They shut down access. Or tried to :)

That’s a lovely thought but I recommend we ponder what a lame duck session is going to look like with this bunch of thugs. Not only will they be hell bent on jamming more garbage through, they will be very angry.

A bad combo when those still in power are neither statesmen nor rational.

There is a state by state section on FR.

I set mine up for automatic viewing years ago, so I forget how to set it up. Maybe someone could help?

What good does that do when there is no server?

It’s 10:55 EDT here, and I’ve been trying to get on FR all morning. This is the first time I’ve been able to. There used to be an alternate address, but lost it when my computer crashed last year. Does anyone have it? I admit I’m addicted to this site, and it’s been miserable.

I’m not a techie but I can’t ge my mind around how the govt could “shut down” the internet. Certainly the admin could control the ISPs based in the US but what about servers that are sitting in buildings overseas?

Dh thinks MS would be a big part of it, we already know Windows can hijack our computers at will.

But, I don’t get how physically the regime could actually gain control over something as huge & diffuse as the internet. China does it but their system was built under govt control from the start.

What am I not getting?

I have started on the Ham journey having received my Tech license. Bought a couple of old Heathkit HF sets for EMP. Interested to know more.

Ham will never replace FR but could be a viable emergency preparation.
BBS’s aren’t viable because most computers don’t have a modem anymore. Yes, you can buy a modem but many people are even getting rid of landline phones because of cell phones.

Face it! If the shtf there is NO replacement for FR. Even Ham radio can be commandeered if the gubmint really wanted to. And don’t forget if you get your license you agree to certain legalities. And, yes there are FCC monitors out there that listen for law breakers. And also, the FCC KNOWS WHERE YOU LIVE when you fill out those license forms.

Of course if a “One Second After” or “Patriots” scenario occurs then it won’t matter anyway. The government will be just as ineffective as you are. That’s when Ham tube equipment will be handy.

An aside for those buying shortwave radios. Make sure you buy one that receives all the Ham bands and that it has a “BFO” so you can decode the upper side bands or lower side bands used in HAM. I’ve owned several short wave receivers over the years and it’s informative to tune into foreign broadcasts. I’ve listened to China, Cuba, a couple of old eastern block nations. Problem is now many of the old SW biggies like BBC aren’t broadcasting anymore. Maybe they think because of the Internet why bother?

Keep in mind also that there are absolutely no controls of the internet in Russia or it’s peoples use of.....anything can come from there.

I like the idea of another place to meet should FR be taken down. Keep us informed as this developes please. Especially as the election draws near for I anticipate BOS thugs will be busy on line crashing what they can and will when it matters for him to do just that. He’s a vile one and nothing past him to do.
