Was the ZOT a benevolent force in Latin America?

Posted on 07/06/2010 11:06:53 AM PDT by DrBombbay

For decades the CIA has undertaken operations all over the world to support right wing regimes. In Latin America and elsewhere there tho it seems thier efforts often led to massive amounts of death of civilians with the US govt often looking the other way. Would you folks say the ends justified the means regarding the many regimes the CIA propped up and supported in the name of 'anticommunism'? I dont beleive the idea of imperialism was at play, but its clear the safety of US interests (political and economic) were clearly the goal in these operations

Nicaragua, for one, is better off thanks to the Contras and CIA support for them. They have free elections, and are free to make stupid choices like electing ex-Sandinista Ortega as Prez.

Did anti communist activities cause more deaths in Central and South America than Stalin's and Mao's collectives, gulags, reeducation, work camps or "mental hospitals" caused? (You're shootin' for about a hundred million, here.)

Didn't think so.

Truly the ZOT is a benevolent force. Well, maybe not benevolent, but a force to be sure!

Too stupid for words.

Have the Commies been a “benevolent force” ANYWHERE?

I’ll take “our b@st@rds” over their b@st@rds any day, warts and all.

Not quite my area of expertise, but I will make a few observations:

The US said that it was in Vietnam to promote freedom and hold back communism. We said that if we left, there would be a bloodbath. The Leftists at home succeeded in crippling our war effort. We came home -- and there was a bloodbath.

The US helped the Shah of Iran. We said that we were helping to westernize an important country in the midst of Islamic repression. The Leftists at home scared people with tales of SAVAK, the Shah's bloodthirsty secret police. We abandoned the Shah, and Khomeini came to power. And for 30 years, Iran has been a major exporter of terrorism.

Cuba, Nicaragua, El Salvador, etc. All quite similar.

The 20th century was a bloody century. The Communists were involved. We were involved. Who really bears responsibility for the killing? I don't think it's the CIA.

On balance, I say that we have been trying to do the right thing, we've tried to promote freedom, that Leftists at home have succeeded in tying our hands, and that Communists abroad have shed a lot of blood -- and often convinced people that it's all our fault.

Yes, the CIA did more good than bad in Latin America. Though its often lambasted efforts, we now see free nations and economic growth in the entire region.

More interestingly, throughout the Cold War and up to today, Latin America has been primarily the preserve of the CIA and Special Operations and they have used economy of force to achieve national objectives.

Compare this with other areas which are controlled by conventional military force; South East Asia, Iraq, Post-2002 Afghanistan, where you have seen some dismal failures.

Question in my college history course: “What is the final, ultimate power in Central America”?

I argued for the Catholic Church. Wrong. Professor said the correct answer was: “The USMC.”

Back the, one could say that the force (air force) is backing you to a Central American.

Now they know it is a case of “The Farce is behind you.” Probably hiding behind Larry Sinclair. Or whatever he is doing behind Sinclair.
