Every morning before school, Barney the rabbit could expect a little treat and a bit of loving attention.
But when his owner, 13-year-old Kiera Bailey, came downstairs to make her daily check on him, the schoolgirl received a dreadful surprise.
Instead of her beloved pet - bought nine years ago after a bad experience at school - there was an empty hutch and a threatening note, apparently from animal rights extremists.

This was a domestic animal, not a wild one. Domestic rabbits can’t survive in the wild for more than a day. He wasn’t a “captive.” The very fact that he lived to the advanced age of nine shows that he was better off receiving good veterinary care than ending as a fox’s lunch in the wild. You think it was fun for him to be eaten by a fox?
Your ignorance and naivete are almost as appalling as your suggestion that theft can be “the right idea.”

Yeah, I'm sure Thumper preferred having to fight for his life against dogs, foxes, feral cats, not to mention having to scrounge for his own food. And winter is doubtless a blast since his food supply all but dries up.
Yeah, Thumper would definitely prefer that to a climate controlled environment where he was hand fed by children who loved him. /s

I'm assuming that you have NO pets, correct? I mean, after all, every possible animal that you could have for a pet were, somewhere back in their family trees, wild animals ...

That animal was dead within 48 hours. Domesticated rabbits can't survive on grass like the wild ones can. It piles up in their guts and they die in agony.

If that rabbit was bred and raised in captivity it had no clue how to survive on its own in the wild. Your act was crueler than keeping it in the house where it was fed and safe from predators.
I assuming you or your children also petted it and played with it. In other words it knew people not other rabbits.
Sorry but these types of rabbits are domestically raised and have no survival skills such as wild rabbits.............
<A nine year old rabbit?
We had our little baby for 11 years. When we got her, the lifespan for domestic rabbits was around 6 years +/-. Now it is about 10 years. Our new little one is about 2 years and we hope to keep her a long time.
Unless the animal is being abused, why would you take it? (actually you should call the ASPCA or animal control, not steal somebody’s property) I support some animal rights causes, but I’d never support this kind of thing. Rabbits are actually very social animals and bond with their owner. Poor rabbit is probably as confused and sad as the little girl.
I doubt it...this is a lot more traumatic than simply admitting a very old animal passed.

This Rabbit wasn’t raised in the wild, it was breed for a pet. It knows nothing about being “free”.
I didn’t have the heart to rant on Sacajawea as that has been done enough. One could even stretch the point that some NAMBLA member or other pervert could say “I believe that children really want to have sex and should be free to do so, and so I take them from their prisons of restrictive parents and allow them to be free and pursue their wild desires.” (Of course no comparison between animals and children, and children are not “property” - but the idea is the same - leave me alone!!)
My buddy had a HUGE (and old) rabbit that ended up having it’s hutch toppled and broken into by what must have been a pack of dogs. Along with a bunch of rabbit fur amongst the wreckage was a dead dog! Clawed open on it’s neck and belly. I had always hoped that it was the rabbit that had done it. That rabbit had big strong legs with long claws.
It was.

I’ve got a pair of seven-year-old rabbits.
Our rabbit was paper trained and hopped and ran around the cellar. Smart critters!
Thanks! I suppose we were about 4th grade and a kid up the block was selling a bunch of rabbits for $5 bucks or something. We ran back home and rounded up what we could.
Brought the rabbit back to our fort to keep and share. And not let the parents know ‘cuz they had already told us “no” when we asked them if we could buy one. I think they got suspicious a few hours later when we asked for lettuce on our baloney sandwiches!
My buddy’s parent’s let him keep it at his house across the street. They moved away about five years later taking the rabbit with them. Several years later I visited them and the rabbit was still there. It was shortly after that he told me about the attack.
I think his (her??) name was Thumper as well! (10-year olds come up with the greatest names!)
