It's Shakespeare -- in Klingon

ARLINGTON, Va.- In the United States, where many people can't speak English properly, a Washington acting troupe says it will perform Shakespeare in Klingon.

During its annual benefit Sept. 25, the Washington Shakespeare Company in Arlington, Va., will perform selections from "Hamlet" and "Much Ado About Nothing" in both English and the language invented for Klingon characters of the Star Trek films, The Washington Post reported Sunday.

The effort was inspired by a line spoken by English actor David Warner in "Star Trek VI," in which his Klingon character declares, "You have not experienced Shakespeare until you have read him in the original Klingon....."

The company will speak the verse in both English and Klingon with the lines in iambic pentameter. A group in Pennsylvania calling itself the Klingon Language Institute is responsible for the translations, the Post said.

Should read “Will let you live for food”. Must have been a poor translation.

Oh yeah, Shatner's still waiting to do Shakespeare in Esperanto I guess.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Incubus_(1965_film)

Incubus (Esperanto: Inkubo) is a 1965 black-and-white American horror film, restored in 2001. Incubus was directed by Leslie Stevens, creator of The Outer Limits, and stars William Shatner, shortly before he would begin his work on Star Trek... The film was performed entirely in the constructed language Esperanto. This was done to create an eerie, other-worldly feeling, and the director has prohibited dubbing into other languages.

Even assuming you receive a cranial trauma serious enough to make "Shakespeare as portrayed by prune-headed aliens" seem like a good idea, why would you ever pick the goddamn romantic comedy? Of all the Bard's works, this is the one that benefits least from a warrior culture and a language that sounds like you're choking on a furball. Hamlet would work, and be 20 times shorter as it would skip directly to the final scene where everyone kills each other. Macbeth would no longer be driven mad, cursed and slaughtered for his regicide:

MhaQ'Beth: I've just killed the king!

Klingon population: Awesome! Hail King MhaQ'Beth!

Macbeth: w00t!

Or how about Othello, where things would have gone much easier for everyone:

I'agHo: My lord, I fear your wife is unfaithful with ...

OKHel'lo: How dare you, you filthy P'tagh!

[beheads I'agHo]
