Pete Rose makes tearful apology (It's about time)
The Boston Globe ^ | 09/14/2010 | Matt Pepin

On Saturday, the Cincinnati Reds celebrated the 25th anniversary of Pete Rose's 4,192d hit, which broke Ty Cobb's career hits record.

Later that night, at a roast of Rose at a casino in Indiana, Rose broke down and cried as he made a heartfelt apology for his involvement in betting on baseball.

"I disrespected the game of baseball," Rose said. "When you do that, you disrespect your teammates, the game and your family."

Lying about gambling doesn’t change his stats. He earned them. They deserve to be recognized.

this is why honor is a dying virtue in modern-day society... as my husband and i raise our boys, this is the tide we swim against...

“...at a casino in Indiana...”

As I recall, MLB commissioner Bowie Kuhn suspended Willie Mays and Mickey Mantle for promoting gambling casinos ... and Denny McLain for illegal bookmaking ... and George Steinbrenner for making illegal campaign contributions.

I'm pretty sure today's moral ambiguity and astronomical cash flows have not improved the quality of baseball. I, for one, yearn for those simpler times. Pete Rose can take another decade or so to think about his sins for all I care. Maybe then, he'll find a more appropriate venue to express his heartfelt contrition.

Pete should be in the HOF based on what he accomplished as a player on the field, not what he did as a manager.

“...at a casino...”

Appropriate enough. He interrupted his poker game long enough to apologize for gambling.

Pete was/is his own worst enemy. Many of us here in Cincinnati defended him based upon our belief in his statements and protestations. His time to confess was 1989. He blew it. His sincerity is forever suspect.

I teach my kids that hard work should be rewarded, apologies should be accepted, punishment should be appropriate, and mercy should be granted.

They are recognized in the hall. I believe that his bat that broke the record is in the hall. I'm sure other articles of his are in there referring to his accomplishments. What is a little ironic is that the player who formerly held the record (Ty Cobb) was a despicable psycho of a man. There is strong evidence that he committed murder. Yet, he's in the hall. Why? Because he didn't break the one rule that keeps you out of the hall, gambling.

If they want to make an exception for Pete Rose, then they need to make an exception for Joe Jackson and Eddie Cicotte. Jackson would have certainly been in the hall and Cicotte would have most likely made it if given a chance to continue playing. He was already a fringe HOF'er when he was banned.

It has been quite a while since I have visited the Hall of Fame but when I did they had a display showing the top leaders in significant career statistics. Unless they have removed this display Pete Rose would of course be at the top of career hits and thus is in the Hall of Fame. Oh you want a plaque and formal induction ceremony for him too? Shoeless Joe Jackson is in line in front of him for that and still waiting.

The man’s been punished enough.

I say we let him play.

Forever losing your livelihood for gambling is punishment enough compared to other crimes players commit.

The same applies to Joe Jackson. I'm not saying Jackson was innocent but the ongoing Black Sox scandal is that the Hall of Fame has no place for Shoeless Joe on its walls but it does have a spot for Charles Comiskey, the tightwad owner who provoked his players into throwing the World Series by financially abusing them (he also helped maintain baseball's color barrier).

A lifetime ban should not extend beyond the grave. It also should not extend into a museum. Let's finally acknowledge that a player's personal morality is not and never has been a criteria for induction the Hall of Fame despite the Hall's "character clause." If character truly was a criteria, why are racists, drug abusers, adulterers, alcoholics and professed cheats in the Hall? adulterers, alcoholics and professed cheats in the Hall?

Rose became baseball's all-time hit king 25 years ago. It's time to finally allow voters to decide whether he and Jackson belong in the Hall. And if they make it, we simply list their baseball sins alongside their achievements thusly.

The case for Pete Rose, Shoeless Joe

“I didn’t say...it was okay to lie for decades...”

But you condone it by supporting this vile liar for inclusion into the BHOF.

“Get over yourself.”

Small wonder you are so popular on this topic.!

Banned for life - it's there for a reason!

Why are all of us SOOOO dumb and you are SOOOO smart?

Oh, you aren't!

He bet on the Reds every night - to win.

No he didn't. He bet on them sometimes to win, other times he didn't bet on them at all.

Pete's a scumbag, so one can only assume he's the type who would manage differently, depending on whether or not he had money on them that night.

Doesn't matter though. Baseball's been clear about it since 1920. If you gamble on baseball, you are banished from baseball. Forever.

Crybabies included.

I believe that his bat that broke the record is in the hall.

Despite that fact, Pete allegedly sold "the bat that broke the record" to countless suckers again and again.

No he didn't. He bet on them sometimes to win, other times he didn't bet on them at all.

“I bet on my team every night. I didn’t bet on my team four nights a week. I was wrong,” said Rose, who accepted a lifetime ban for gambling in 1989. “I bet on my team to win every night because I love my team, I believe in my team,” he added. “I did everything in my power every night to win that game.”

Look, sir, I grew up watching Pete Rose and Johnny Bench at many a Reds’ game with my beloved dad. Those are good memories. I’d like to see my childhood baseball hero finally be forgiven for his mistake and begin to repair his life.

That doesn’t make me a liberal piece of scum. It makes me nostalgic.

Super! Enjoy your nostalgia!

Just understand this:

YOU ARE WRONG!

(PS - it's NOT a mistake to LIE FOR 20 YEARS - IT AN ‘ON PURPOSE.’)

You argue like an emotional liberal.

Wussy.
