Math Instruction Seems Skillfully Designed NOT To Work
Hubpages.com ^ | August 15, 2010 | Bruce Deitrick Price

For a few years I thought the worst possible gimmick in education was Whole Word, basically a device to make sure kids don't learn to read.

In the last few months, the clamor grew about Core Standards and National Standards, and I started to focus on arithmetic. More and more I’m struck by the parallel with Whole Word. The Education Establishment seems to specialize in coming up with techniques that are almost guaranteed not to work.

I know there are cynics who will say, well, of course, everyone knows this. Even so, the thing that fascinates me is the amount of skill and intelligence needed to create something that is not what it appears to be. I’m still stunned. Did people really go into a room and say: how do we teach math so that nobody learns math??? Well, it sure seems that way.

I think we can see the phenomenon best in New Math. Experts said it was the perfect way to teach math; but it was trashed only a few years later. The flaw was that easy arithmetic was mixed in with advanced concepts so that kids were too confused to learn even the basic stuff. Unfortunately, that central flaw was rolled forward into all the subsequent programs, for example, the many programs within Reform Math.

As so often happens in education, the public has to deal with this weird choice: are the people in charge hopelessly stupid or hopelessly subversive?

For a sense of how bad things are, here is a scary report from C. F. Navarro, PhD (on the excellent site Illinoisloop.org):

“At the George Washington Middle school where I taught eight-grade math in 1998, only a few of my math students were at grade level. The rest were at a fourth-grade level, or lower. Most had not yet learned their multiplication tables and were still counting with their fingers. By the end of the year some had progressed to about a fifth-grade level, a substantial improvement, but far short of the comprehension and skills required for algebra. Nonetheless, all were required to register for algebra the following year.

More troublesome still was my algebra class. The students in that class were all nice kids, mainly from middle-class families and, therefore, on the school's "talented and gifted," program. Yet, with few exceptions, they didn't know how to work with fractions, decimals or integers. They lacked the power of concentration to set up and solve multiple-step problems. They were incapable of manipulating symbols and reasoning in abstract terms. Like most of my general math students, some had not yet learned their multiplication tables and were still counting with their fingers.”

Could things really be that bad if the Education Establishment were sincerely trying to teach math? Hard to imagine.

So what is the answer? Many businesses and parents (with kids in public schools) have to consider tutoring (e.g., Saxon Math, Singapore Math, Math Mammoth, MathUSee). Next, the more I look at the National Standards and Core Standards, the more I hope that states will reject these federal proposals. If you’re curious, go to corestandards.org to read some of these bizarre so-called Standards.

One of the distinguishing traits in the newer Standards is a gimmick called spiraling. Children are moved quickly from topic to topic. Teachers introduce as much variety as possible. Just as a “thought experiment” I wondered, well, what would total simplicity look like?? I wrote a piece for hubpages called “Price’s Easy Arithmetic For First Graders.”

For anyone curious about New Math, here's my review of a book published about 1964 to tell parents how to understand New Math. Funny in a grim way. See the one review of this book:

One more thing - here is my favorite video of all time - it explains the garbage that is “reform” math:

She is concise and to the point.

My grandkids, age 2 years + 1 month - bring ME books to read every night before going to sleep when I babysit.

Making Dinosaurs growl, finding trees, counting plants, counting cars, finding balls, seeing birds fly, tracing triangles, ....

Makes fun night for the twins.

So, Rabin,
What was your verdict? These textbooks were the result of stupidity or subversion?

I had never thought about this stuff at the college level because I assumed that professors would be highly motivated to find the best books. Thus driving bad books off the market. (At lower levels, bureaucrats pick books or the teachers might not be clever enough to evaluate a book’s inner workings. So we don’t expect the best.)

But you’re suggesting a most unpleasant picture. Bad books. And professors so bad they go along with the bad books. At the college level?? Say it ain’t so.

In college, the first day of class one of my teachers showed us his old college calculator. He’d driven a 9” spike through it upon graduation because he hated math and figured he’d never use any.

Guess which subject he taught?

Worse, the professors sometimes get kickbacks from the sale of those bad books. If they didn't write them in the first place.

I hope you also do different voices for different characters. Isn’t it joyful being around the babies and watching them discover things that used to seem mundane?

Hubby was desperately seeking engineers with the ability to actually engineer. They’ve become sparse. After months, he has finally hired two who had proper educations.

The real danger to the country is the destruction, for the past three generations, of the public education system. It is pumping out ignorant fools who hate their own country and have tons of self esteem and little else to offer an employer.

This whole-country, metastatic cancer must be slashed and burned.

When I was that age I was a whiz at multiplication tables.

Unfortunately I'm now at an age where I'm forced to count with my fingers again.........

I always enjoyed multiplication contests back in grade school (about 1970). We had a circle surrounded by spokes with 1 to 12 in between the spokes and about 6 wheels to the page. The teacher would tell us what numbers to put into the circles and then we would multiply that number by 1 to 12 around the wheel. We would go as fast as we could and raise our hand when we were done. For a long time I was always second finished but eventually I got faster than that darn Patrick Casey and I would win. It was very competitive. Catholic school.

My daughter’s gifted math teacher looked me in the eye and said “I’ve never really liked math.” I was asking if she could make some worksheets with more problems on it -since the ridiculous spiraling curriculum would have one fractions problem, one division problem, etc - and after you taught the kid how to do the one fractions problem, there were no more problems of that type to practice - which resulted in NO mastery. Before she told me she did not like math she explained that she could not make worksheets because it would “eat into her copy budget.” She retired the next year.

Use 1-9 for A-I. Use each number only once, and use all nine to make the equation true.
A/B*C+D*E*F/G+H*I=100

First, let’s group by evaluation order:
(A/B*C) + (D*E*F/G) + (H*I) = 100

Now let’s introduce some temporary variables:
X = (A/B*C)
Y = (D*E*F/G)
Z = (H*I)

So we get:
X + Y + Z = 100

We need to isolate a variable, so we rearrange:
X = 100 - (Y + Z)

Next, we are supposed to use the numbers 1 through 9 to make this true:
So Sum(A..I) = Sum(1..9) = 1+2+3+4+5+6+7+8+9 = (1+9) + (2+8) + (3+7) + (4+6) + 5
This reduces to 4(10)+5 or 45.

So because A + B + C + D + E + F + H + I = 45 we can say that for any particular letter s the following is true:
s = 45 - Sum({A..I}-s) where s is some letter A..I and {A..I}-s is the set A..I excluding itself.

Let’s take A. A = 45 - (B + C + D + E + F + H + I)
also
A = (X/C)*B

Using substitution on the second Equation we get:
A = [100 - (Y + Z)]/C*B
So
[100 - ( Y + Z )]/C*B = 45 - (B + C + D + E + F + H + I) = 45 - Sum(B..I)
[100 - ( Y + Z )]/C = [45 - Sum(B..I)]/B
100 - ( Y + Z ) = C*[45 - Sum(B..I)]/B
-Y -Z = C*[45 - Sum(B..I)]/B - 100
-Z = (C*[45 - Sum(B..I)]/B - 100)+Y
Z=-(C*[45 - Sum(B..I)]/B - 100)-Y
So, by substitutions
H*I =-(C*[45 - Sum(B..I)]/B - 100)-(D*E*F/G)
H={-(C*[45 - Sum(B..I)]/B - 100)-(D*E*F/G)}/I

Note now that this H has no A in it’s equality so we can substitute it out of one of the A equations:
A = 45 - (B + C + D + E + F + {-(C*[45 - Sum(B..I)]/B - 100)-(D*E*F/G)}/I + I)
And we continue with such variable-elimination until we get things down to manageable terms and then back substitute.

Or we could do it programmatically, here’s an algorithm [in Ada] to solve the equation:

Use Ada.Text_IO;

Unbelieveable but true - one of the "new" methods of teaching division is guessing...

"How many times do you THINK 2 will go into 20?" -

Uh, 2?

"Ok 2 plus 2 is four. Take away four from 20 and you have 16. How many times do you think 2 will go into 16?"

Seriously - they continue this way until they get to zero.

ANOTHER REASON TO HOMESCHOOL

This ping list is for the “other” articles of interest to homeschoolers about education and public school. This can occasionally be a fairly high volume list. Articles pinged to the Another Reason to Homeschool List will be given the keyword of ARTH. (If I remember. If I forget, please feel free to add it yourself) The main Homeschool Ping List handles the homeschool-specific articles. I hold both the Homeschool Ping List and the Another Reason to Homeschool Ping list. Please freepmail me to let me know if you would like to be added to or removed from either list, or both.

Took me till midnight last night and half the morning, but I got it!

(6/2)*9+(5*7*8)/4+(3*1)=100
(Parentheses added for easier reading)

I’m one of those people who, if I see a puzzle, I can’t let it go until I solve it. There are some I’ve been mulling over for years looking for the answer. This one was nice, it fit on a single page ;)

See post 35 for a more complete answer: that is all possible solutions.

It’s a deliberate strategy that has been in progress for over 50 years.
^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^

It started the very first day our modern schools opened in the mid-1800s to early 1900s. The goal of Horace Mann and John Dewey ( whose influence was felt long before 50 years ago) was **exactly** the social engineering our children suffer today.

Government schools are by **definition** socialist, godless, compulsory, a price-fixed monopoly cartel, and government owned and run!

Since the mid-1800s to early 1900s our nation’s children have been taught by their government schools to be comfortable with:

** socialism
** government cartel projects
** government ownership and management of their lives!
** and at first a luke warm and generic Protestantism that was soon replaced by utter godlessness! ( We know what Christ does with the lukewarm. He spits them out of His mouth!)

The above can not be reformed because it is the very definition of government schooling. Within one to three generations of compulsory, socialist, godless, government owned and run cartel schools we had:

** the federal reserve
** inexorable inflation
** the direct election of senators
** usurpation of large tracts of state land for federal parks ( without compensation, by the way.)
** Woodrow Wilson
** the failed “one world” League of Nations
** feminism
** unions
** Franklin D. Roosevelt’s New Deal
** the abominable U.N.
** Lyndon B. Johnson’s Great Society
** the abolishment of the gold standard

Please note how much of the above had its beginnings **LONG** before 50 years ago.
