Weekly Gardening Thread – 2010 (Vol. 36) October 08

Good morning gardeners. The weather continues to be beautiful here in Mississippi. We could really use some rain but there is none in the forecast. I removed my landscape fabric from my garden and distributed what was left of my mature compost pile on the garden a few days ago and added the straw that I use as a cover on top of the fabric to my new compost pile.

If you are a gardener or you are just starting out and are in need of advice or just encouragement please feel free to join in and enjoy the friendly discussion. Our Freeper community is full of gardeners, each with varying interests and skill levels from Master Gardener to novice.

Daisyjane69 sent me a link to an article about Indoor Winter Vegetable Gardening that some of you may be interested in.

Ping to the Weekly Gardening Ping List.

I hope all of you will stop by.

This is typically a low volume ping list. Once a week for the thread and every once in a while for other FR threads posted that might be of interest.

If you would like to be added to or removed from the list please let me know by FreepMail or by posting to me.

Morning.

We harvested our radishes this week. Really cool heirloom variety that is red on the inside and white outside. Our round carrots are good too, but took forever.

Got another mess of greens and chard last night for dinner. And the peppers just keep hanging in there. With the return of warm temps this week, they should go nuts.

I just canned 20 pints of hot pepper mustard (also called butter). I will need to can more next week. I put some for sale on etsy.com but haven’t had any hits yet. I’m thinking about taking it to the local farmer’s market. We’ll see, don’t know yet.

I am so excited - my first attempt at growing broccoli and just yesterday I spied little broccoli heads forming!

The cabbage is doing well.

I have lots of onions but have no clue how to tell when they are ready.

So many jalapenos I finally strung some up to dry them. Makes my kitchen look festive!

I am trying to construct a green house - (no building skills) to keep some tomato plants growing.

Gardening is the only thing that keeps my mind off of politics.

What will I do in the winter????

Good Morning, I have started several black walnut seeds for Fall planting. I hope I did it correctly. I soaked them for 24 hours then removed the husk and packed the seed in clean sand, dated it and put it in the fridge for 3 months to chill. I also discovered a very unique fruit tree when I bought hay this week. I'm going there again this am to get seeds from it and might even dig up a few. This is an orange tree and is said to come from AZ. It is loaded with thorns and fruit that is said to be quite seedy. The owner is an Ag teacher at a college and brought it back on one of his trips to AZ. He said I could get all I want of either seeds or dig up small trees or both. He loves the trees but his wife hates them because of the thorns.

For those who lament no seasonal changes in their neck of the woods I offer the news from Wisconsin: Fall colors approach peak in Milwaukee, Northern Wisconsin

Travel Wisconsin Website

This website boasts are really cool, interactive map of Wisconsin showing where to go to find some magnificent color. The scene has changed, seemingly over night. If you drag your cursor over the map, the name of the county pops up with an assessment as to how fast the color changes are progressing in that county. I live in Ozaukee County which is a sliver of a County at the southern end of Lake Michigan (on the right hand border of the map). My county is dark orange and just about 3-4 counties north of the border with IL.

Diana lives n Dane County which is the "gold" square county in the lower middle of the state, sort of south west of my county and about 4 times as large. Check out the slide show on the right of the map page.

Why would you want to grow a “seedy” orange tree with thorns?

Dark storm clouds coming in on a cold wind this AM. Time to bring in the last of the tomatoes and freeze the kale.

It is a very attractive tree and I just like the way it looks, but I also enjoy growing cactus. Maybe that says something about my personality, hmmm.

Are you planting anything right now? If so, what?

I just started back yard gardening last year. I’ve done well with herbs (basil, chives, thyme, sage, etc.), not so great with tomatoes, and nothing in Fall/Winter.

Awesome site!

And, yes. I am blessed and cursed to live here. I don’t HAVE to live in this county but I’m a fighter...and I love annoying the LibTards in All Things Politic. They both fear and respect me, LOL!

LOL! Funny you should say that! There was a snake in my store the other day. It took a stockboy and me a while to catch it. It was a baby...so cute...I couldn’t bring myself to shoot it. :)
