A new report calls on NASA to establish a Planetary Defense Coordination Office to lead national and international efforts in protecting Earth against impacts by asteroids and comets.
The final report of the Ad-Hoc Task Force on Planetary Defense of the NASA Advisory Council was delivered to the Council this month, proposing five recommendations that suggest how the space agency should organize, acquire, investigate, prepare, and lead national and international efforts in planetary defense against near-Earth objects.

I had some problems with asteroids a few years back but they went away. Probably because I kept eating hot pepper (afterburner effect?).

Great idea.
I fully support the basic concept, though I don’t think the current people at NASA will get the job done. That’ll have to wait until we have an American administration in place again.

I doubt there’s anything we could do about an asteroid of significant size or comet that’s going to hit us. I guess it doesn’t hurt to start thinking about solutions though. We can’t even begin to do something about it until we really try. I believe one of the biggest problems we would face could be real world testing. Comets and asteroids can vary in many ways, and it isn’t like we have anything coming close to us that we could use for ‘target practice’.
I wonder if ‘they’ would even tell us if one was coming. I tend to doubt it. The governments won’t even be honest with us about the problems we face down here.

How has the Earth made it all of those 4.5 billion years without a Planetary Defense Coordination Office? I know, there’ve been a few mass extinctions along the way but what do you expect?
Besides, NASA is much too busy doing Muslim outreach...can’t be bothered.

And the university types will demand only research into “harmless” far-in-the-future methods that only guarantee research money.. Not solutions.

What a waste of resources. The Marxists tell us that history is programmed (though not by anyone) to end in a static utopia that lasts for all eternity. Obviously this means that no asteroid is capable of striking the earth, since that would prevent this from happening.
The sun won't burn out either. What would become of "social justice?" [/sarcasm]

The UN is way behind the game here, it’s just a move to bring yet another thing under the whip. The actual ongoing search for asteroids began around 1994, when SL-9 fragments crashed into Jupiter a couple dozen times and left marks that lasted for months, and has been catch as catch can for funding, which is a travesty. There’s never been a cheaper defense program, and planetary defense is just what this is about.

If Stargate existed many freepers would be joining up to start a Alpha Site replacement of Earth and the united states.
