Male star leads (All-Girls)field hockey team. Is he an unfair edge(Double Standard at work!)?

Wyoming Seminary in Forty Fort, Pa., is a traditional field hockey powerhouse, so it's no surprise that it's back in contention for a state title, with a berth in the state championship game on the line Wednesday afternoon in Seminary's faceoff with Crestwood (Pa.) High (the semifinal against Crestwood was originally scheduled for Tuesday afternoon but was postponed by bad weather). What is surprising is how Seminary is advancing through the playoffs, on the back of a male player who is singlehandedly dominating all Seminary's opponents. That player is Cornelius Tietze, a junior and German native who joined the Seminary field hockey team this season and has played as the squad's lone male player ... and the only boy on the field in practically all of 24-2 Seminary's games, for that matter. In his last two outings, Tietze led his team to a 4-3 victory over District 3-AA runner-up Donegal with three goals and an assist, and a 4-2 win against Villa Maria, a game in which he again scored three goals.

The CitizensVoice.com game story of Wyoming Seminary's victory against Villa Maria makes it clear just how dominant the German can be. The junior scored the game's first goal, then helped Seminary rebound after it allowed two goals with both a lone-man breakaway goal and the game-winning score just minutes later.

Tietze's dominance has sparked renewed questions of the fairness in allowing a male athlete to play in a sport traditionally played in America by girls alone. Last week, PennLive.com asked that question and received a largely rancorous attack against male participation, with the exception of the two posters who actually were field hockey players.

As many posted on the comments, when a girl is part of the football team: it receives praise; while a boy in an all-girls sport is "wrong" & "sexists".

Is it an “all-girl” sport with a rule prohibiting males, or is it a game that is traditionally played by girls? If the rules don’t prohibit it, and if he’s good, he can play. Period.

Every now and then the ACLU makes a stink and forces some school to allow a girl onto a male team and to let her into the male locker room. I see a double standard at work here. I say he should stay on the team.

Wonder how long until we start seeing this on a wider scale due to Title IX.

I agree. In fact, in some states, it stated in their rule book that you can have an co-ed team as long the sport is not played by two separate genders. In other words, in this case, if the boys do not have a field hockey team, then they can be in the girls team. This is why you hear many girls in football team. Since they do not have a girls (tackle) football team, they can be in the football team. It is strange when you think about it. Like you said, if no rules prohibiting of a co-ed team, then it is legal.

“Tietze’s dominance has sparked renewed questions of the fairness in allowing a male athlete to play in a sport traditionally played in America by girls alone.”

So one guy taking on an opposing team of ten girls is considered unfair?

“Last week, PennLive.com asked that question and received a largely rancorous attack against male participation, with the exception of the two posters who actually were field hockey players.”

I thought guys and gals were supposed to be equal. Judging by the Feministas reaction it looks like reality says something else.

so, let’s review the facts:

a) he’s the star athlete on the team
b) on a team of female hardbodies, he’s the only male.

All I can say is... WAY TO GO, SLICK! (wink)

I’m trying to figure out how this guy keeps from getting distracted by all the hot chicks on the field he’s playing with and against. It looks like he has great focus and concentration and that tenacious male drive to win even when the odds are against him.

Would Tietze’s name be pronounced “teats”?

That’s the team slogan — “Come out and watch us play! You’ll be staring at our Tietze the whole time!”

My heart goes out to this kid. Not only is he undoubtedly taking a rash of crap from his buddies, but I'm certain those girls aren't cutting him any slack with those sticks.

Actually I feel the same way about this as I do girls invading male domains. He should compete with his own.

We’re men, MANLY men, we’re men in Tietze . Yeah!
We roam around the forest looking for fights.
We’re men, we’re men in Tietze.
We rob from the rich and give to the poor, that’s right!
We may look like pansies, but don’t get us wrong or else we’ll put out your lights.
We’re men, we’re men in Tietze (TIGHT Tietze ),
Always on guard defending the people’s rights.
When you’re in a fix just call for the men in Tietze !

I get the tit for tat argument; but seriously, he shouldn’t be playing.
