Traditional Christmas in Copenhagen

Copenhagen is a Christmas city, not just because Greenland (part of Denmark) is the home of the 'Julemand' (Santa) and Denmark the home of the Christmas stamp (and indeed it is), but because this holiday is the most eagerly anticipated by all Danes who have passed down its simple pleasures and traditions from generation to generation.

Everyone should be able to go to Copenhagen for Christmas. We were fortunate to be able to go there for Christmas two years ago and spent time with our good friends on Lillejul and Juleaften.

The wonderful thing was that Hans Otto and Else are still active in their late eighties. With tears in their eyes they were so very happy to see we came to see and be with them.

I met them as a Mormon missionary. They saw that the church was not for them, but they took me in and treated me like I was a family member. They were overwhelmed to learn that I had left the church. The Tuborg and the Akvavit and coffee in the morning was special.

We went to church services at the Lutheran church where the Kristus is located. That was very special to see that magnificent original piece of work. The room also has all of the apostles by Thorvaldson presented there. If I were ever tempted to join any church, it would most likely be Lutheran simply because of this special connection.

Merry Christmas. Thank you for posting this...Denmark is the country of my ancestry, well, part of it anyway. I’ve always wanted to go there.

I have been in Copenhagen during Christmas several years. Nowhere else have I been where The Christmas spirit seemed more alive.

Denmark is a beautiful country. Visiting Copenhagen was wonderful. We have so many friends that live there. I would love to visit during Christmastime.

When I first arrived in Denmark in 1960, I was sent to live in the southern Jylland town of Aabenraa. Only fifteen years after the war there were lots of Nazi’s still living there. I met one guy that had been in prison in England for ten years.

In those days the Danes really appreciated Americans and they treated us like royalty. Very special people in every way.

I was in Denmark in 1960-1963. The overwhelming memories made it necessary to go there one more time for Christmas.

Spent two Christmases in Copenhagen back in the 90’s. Went caroling on the walking street with our international church. Heard a choir sing in one of the beautiful churches. Lots of fond memories of the Danes at Christmas time.

Just had another Christmas memory there....eating æbleskiver and drinking hot chocolate with whipped cream on top at Tivoli. Delicious!

I am so happy that you were able to spend time in Denmark during those two years. You could have been sent to a hellhole and instead you were rewarded. .... well, aren’t you speshul ;) winkwink

I love you and hope that you and yours have a very Merry Christmas, and don’t drown down there in God’s country.

Merry Christmas to you too!

Sort of reminds me of the Christmas markets we used to visit in Germany (lived there 4 years). Love European Christmas!
