Do Cholesterol Drugs Do Any Good?
Bloomberg Business Week ^ | 01/17/2008 | John Carey

Yes, Wright saw, the drugs can be life-saving in patients who already have suffered heart attacks, somewhat reducing the chances of a recurrence that could lead to an early death. But Wright had a surprise when he looked at the data for the majority of patients, like Winn, who don't have heart disease. He found no benefit in people over the age of 65, no matter how much their cholesterol declines, and no benefit in women of any age. He did see a small reduction in the number of heart attacks for middle-aged men taking statins in clinical trials. But even for these men, there was no overall reduction in total deaths or illnesses requiring hospitalization—despite big reductions in "bad" cholesterol. "Most people are taking something with no chance of benefit and a risk of harm," says Wright. Based on the evidence, and the fact that Winn didn't actually have angina, Wright changed his mind about treating him with statins—and Winn, too, was persuaded. "Because there's no apparent benefit," he says, "I don't take them anymore."

Some people’s bodies make lots of cholesterol.

And some people's bodies make NONE. Remember, there's two types of Cholesterol, HDL and LDL. One is good, the other is bad.

In my case, my bad cholesterol wasn't bad, but my good cholesterol was non-existant. Lipitor fixed that.

Taking Tylenol too often and especially after consuming alcohol for a consistent period of time will be harmful to your health. One’s kidneys do not react well to a steady diet of Tylenol - especially after alcohol intake...

Inflammation even at the cellular level is the most common event in the beginning of disease - from cancer to heard disease... Reduce inflammation and one can reduce life threatening problems...

Yah, OK. I figured as much.

Does your Doctor have a bone through his nose? Do you go in for palm readings and tea leaves too? Or is hippy medicine where you draw the line?

:-)

Really... I’m just kidding. Don’t get angry. :-)

Google “Magnesium and Cholesterol” and you’ll see that Magnesium is MORE EFFECTIVE than statins without the side effects, plus the other benefits are tremendous. People with kidney disease however need to be careful.

Dunno, but my cholesterol was in the normal range and the doc said we can get it lower with new drugs.

I said hell no! why do I want to take drugs to get outside of the normal range just because you can go to the low side of normal?

Ramius - you are just an ignorant slut - as use to be said on SNL a long time ago...

Get educated Ramius - read and research ... beyond your bias - otherwise you are just an ignorant smarta$$..

It is easy to pop off and try to dispel what you don’t agree with ... but it is much more work to GET EDUCATED Ramius ... but getting educated takes time and effort - something I don’t think your are willing or used to doing...

Ignorance is bliss Ramius... remain ignorant if you wish...

Right. I’m glad you found a remedy.

It's not like I had much of a choice, I didn't have a problem with bad cholesterol otherwise I'd have done as others suggested above (ie: Fish oil capsules, oatmeal, change diet, vitamins, etc..) None of that seemed to help for low GOOD cholesterol.

If someone DOES have a natural remedy to raise good cholesterol, I'm all ears. I'd really rather NOT have to take Lipitor if I can help it...

If you read closely the stats the drugs only help improve your chances of not having a stroke or heart attack by 1/2 of 1%. That's all. Not to mention long term side effects, etc., etc.. I won't take them. There is no study out there that is 100% conclusive that High Cholesterol has anything to with heart attack or strokes.
Now there is a lot of information out there on other causes like inflammation.

Magnesium and Pottasium are how you alkalize your body, calcium too. Drink OJ (never suppliment pottasium) and buy some CALM Magnesium at whole foods, the stuff rocks.

My cholesterol is 220. Big deal IMO. It was below 200 for the first 45 years of my life. 220 for the rest of it doesn’t concern me. Obamacare will kill me first.

My doctor is a realist. I said I have at best 20 years left, most of where my arteries are now was done over the previous 60 years. The (theoretical) benefits for the next 20 just don’t mean anything in the big picture. Drop 10 pounds and exercise a little more will be much more beneficial. He agreed.

If I choose to get it lower, I can (and have done so in the past) in ways that are much safer than statins or other drugs.

I had a big problem with LDL. Took Lipitor as directed by the doctor and one day just quit. In leiu, I changed my diet and bad habits and over time my problems went away. Your problem is interesting. I never heard that one before. Thank god the drug works for you. Have a long and healthy life.

Thank you. I take magnesium supplements and eat lots of dark leafy greens like kale for the calcium - but due to my diabetes, I can’t handle orange juice or milk - both shoot my blood sugar up. So minerals are alkaline? That’s interesting.

Yep, I chose the healthy lifestyle route to fight my high LDL. I saw a quote by Jack Lalanne that got me motivated several years ago and has kept me focused.

“Life is hard and takes a lot of work. Any dumb ass can just die”

J. Lalanne

Works for me! :-)

Just curious - anyone know how the risk changes with mildly high blood pressure (155/95 at age 50)? My doctor wants me to take medicine to reduce it by a whopping 10 points, and I have a very hard time believing that would have a measurable impact on my odds of a heart attack. My resting pulse is around 55-60. A hip injury while riding horses has hampered my running schedule for a couple of years, but I’m trying to work back to running 20 miles/week.

Not trying to highjack a good thread, but lots of folks here seem to have done some reading on these sorts of subjects...
