Researchers aim to resurrect mammoth in five years

Japanese researchers will launch a project this year to resurrect the long-extinct mammoth by using cloning technology to bring the ancient pachyderm back to life in around five years time.

The researchers will try to revive the species by obtaining tissue this summer from the carcass of a mammoth preserved in a Russian research laboratory, the Yomiuri Shimbun reported.

"Preparations to realise this goal have been made," Akira Iritani, leader of the team and a professor emeritus of Kyoto University, told the mass-circulation daily.

Under the plan, the nuclei of mammoth cells will be inserted into an elephant's egg cell from which the nuclei have been removed, to create an embryo containing mammoth genes, the report said.

I, for one, welcome our new pachyderm overlords.

Actually, it would be nice to restore the North American branch of the pachyderm family. Africa and Asia have had all the fun for too long. I’d imagine mammoths could do ok up in the Yukon/NW Territories/North Slope area, though they might be a bit of a headache for the drilling sites.

They don't make 'em like that any more.

And that, as they say, is your loss.

I’d like to be among the first Wooly ranchers.

You're gonna need a really big barn.

Proof positive that OTHER country’s scientists can also get a gubmint grant for whatever improbable pipe dream that enters their little heads.

Sorry, I’m no good with a spear.

An M4 or .357 magnum? I’m your guy. Or a bow. Or 3 feet of 1095 steel.

Wonder if the later would be effective? Mine cuts 1 1/2 inch diameter rose bush branches like they’re made of Nerf...

This is a really bad idea. A case for the “slippery slope”.
Anyone care to speculate where this might end up in ten or twenty years?

This isn’t the scary thing. It gets scary when they successfully gengineer a retrovirus to rewrite our own DNA.

Although I’ll be the first one to sign up for a pair of wings.

That ends in a BAD place, though.

Well, to smoke properly you need 4 lbs of wood per pound of meat (give or take). A mammoth weighs in at 16,000 lbs or so, so we need 64,000 lbs of pecan.

Or 60,000 lbs of mesquite and 4,000 lbs of pecan (trust me).

This is doable...

Assuming 14,000 lbs for the gross weight, dressed weight should be about 9800 lbs (figuring 71% dress weight). We'll need right at 5 tons of wood to smoke it. And about 459 gallons of BBQ sauce.

I think those numbers are correct. Culinary school was back in '02.

It should serve about 19,600 people, and we'll need 900 gallons of potato salad, and 900 gallons of ranch style beans.

And about 6000 loaves of bread.

Someone else can figure out how much beer. And the number of trash cans and porta-potties.

We're way off on our wood calcs. I have 40% wood weight to meat ratio in my notes.

But that might not include charcoal briquettes to provide the cooking heat, while using the wood for flavor.

I should have taken better notes in school.

Haha, are you sure you weren’t a quartermaster in the military? Very good logistical conclusions. I feel compelled to point out though, that you forgot the chili. Chili is an ever important addition to any meal heh.

After all your math, I’m surprised you didn’t figure out the beer, based on your conclusion of feeding 19,600 people, we would need 235,200 beers. Although that number could be adjusted based on the number of underage people there. The math is based on everyone 18+ (drinking age in Canada). The only left to determine then would be what kind.

Trash cans and the blue rockets? That would be something beyond my paygrade to figure out, but a very valid problem to figure out.

On a side note, I wonder if they’ll bring back the sabertooth too, always thought they would make great pets.

an M4, or a 357 magnum vs a mammoth? Sounds like you got a pair, but that might be too risky, if you’re shooting something that big, I’d probably stick with the .470 Nitro Express, make sure it gets done right. Only reason I would want to spear the thing is for bragging rights, there is no other practical reason.

I’m thinking 3 feet of 1095 steel would be effective, from what I have heard, mammoths are ferocious and aggressive, unlike most of their elephant cousins, I think it would take a stout heart to fight one in close combat heh. Talk about earning your meal.
