Once upon a time, back in the days of my childhood, there was an orange soda (or as we called it, an "orange Co-Cola") called SunCrest. NB: this is SunCrest, not to be confused with Sunkist orange soda, which was only introduced in the late Seventies). I vividly remember drinking buying bottles of this out of the Coke machine at the local laundromat when my family was washing.
SunCrest was created and originally marketed (1938) by the NuGrape people. But in 1982 it was bought by the Monarch company of Atlanta, GA and it became very scarce, as Sunkist pretty much moved in and took its place. In 2007 the Dad's Root Beer company bought it from Monarch and, as I understand it, it is now sold only in Indiana (though a few nostalgia and specialty businesses still sell it in its vintage bottle).
A couple years ago I actually e-mailed the Dad's company and asked local businesses to begin stocking SunCrest again, but apparently the Dad's Root Beer people are simply not interested in marketing this classic vintage drink any more.
Does anyone else on FR remember SunCrest? Are there any FReepers fortunate enough to live where it can still be purchased today?
I’m pretty sure I’ve seen Frostie Root Beer at Bristol Farms in CA.

“How about Cherry Smash??”
Oh my goodness... Cherry Smash. Now that was one from my childhood. We would make Cherry Smash ice cream floats. I remember how it all sort of blended together and my Mom came up with the idea that it was “magic and would only happen if children were in the room”. I remember making them for my two nephews when they were little. Of course, they were smarter and knew that ice cream sodas weren’t magical at all. They weren’t any FUN at all!

I’ve tried several orange sodas, and Crush tasted the best to me, perhaps because it some actual orange juice in it. Of course, as with the excellent Carver’s Ginger Ale, it’s not available in the South.
Maybe Chocola...or ChocCola...terrible stuff. But it had its fans.
Chocolate & Cola combined. Tastes as bad as it sounds.
From New York City, Dr. Brown's Black Cherry Soda is incomparable if there's yesterday's brisket being served slightly warmed on good Rye with plain old yellow mustard. That's real Brooklyn.
Last best drinks I like are some Boylan's flavors and Stewart's Key Lime Soda if it's chilled so cold as to be on the brink of frozen on a hot summer's day.
If I remember correctly, Kickapoo Joy Juice was named after what they called the local moonshine in the old “Li’l Abner” comic strip. Perhaps someone can correct me if I’m wrong.

Nesbit Orange is available at “Food City” supermarkets in the Southeast. I discovered them a couple of years ago, and occasionally buy a six pack for special occassions.
They are strong and delicious. :)
Yep, Grappette has been purchased by Walmart and is now available there cheap as their store brand. It seems to taste like I remember it, although it’s hard to compare the taste of a soda from a 2-litre plastic bottle to a Grappette in a tiny glass bottle. They just seem to taste better in the glass bottles... :)
Have you ever tried Red Rock Cola? It’s an old brand from Atlanta. It’s available in glass bottles at Food City supermarkets. I tried it last year, and was shocked at how much I liked it. Red Rock is pretty strong, like a fountain coke that’s heavy on the syrup. It also has a bit more of a vanilla taste, but very subtle.
The only problem is that it’s significantly more expensive than Coca-Cola, and the taste isn’t necessarily even obviously better, just somewhat different than Coke...
Anyhow, something to try if you see it on the shelves somewhere and like to sample new sodas.
I haven’t noticed SunCrest Orange on the shelves in East Tennessee, but I’ll be sure to look for it specifically and let you know.
