Just a suggestion for those looking for articles in FR, or for trying to see if an article has been previously posted.
Go ahead and use the search tool provided by FR but if you can't find what you need, use google or yippy (I recommend yippy, since google is leftist scum) and type:
free republic topic name
in the search bar. (Where topic name is the subject or article title or part of article title you're looking for.)
I get really good results doing that.
(Just a tip.)
duplicate post ;)
If you use the search “any word” option instead of the “all word” option, you get better results.
good one
:)
There must be some conspiracy with computer guys that they don't want you to find your files or articles. Windows XP had a great simple search but then they changed it to the sucky search in Vista that has a less than 10% success rate and left it that way in Windows 7.
even getter search using:
“topic name” site:freerepublic.com
This only searches the freerepublic.com web site for that phrase.
I am not sure about other web searches, but, Google will let you do this search:
site: www.freerepublic.com (topic)
It works very well at finding things.
Other searches probably do the same thing, but, you will have to investigate the method.
I admittedly use Bing bec. FR search thingy doesn’t get me the results I need so I just use “freerepublic” then the keyword of the thread. But yippie I’ll try..
I’ve added Yippy to my browser to try to avoid to very liberal Google whenever possible. But, in some of my searches Yippy sends me to Google.
Just replace the “recent” with whatever word or topic you’re looking for.
Good search programs seem to be a weak link with many of my sites.
I use Yahoo to find what I’m looking for.
Last year my wife and I bought a Hobie Oasis Mirage tandem kayak. The dealer’s service basically amounted to taking the yak out of its protective wraps.
From day one the rudder didn’t work well. The search mechanism on the American Hobie site was/is worthless, basically, like FR’s, inspite of rudder problems being across the board with the Hobies.
I spent a few hours trying to fix it to no avail.
My wife suggested that I do a Google search. I tried Yahoo first and no real help. I went to Google and found a pictorial site showing how to adjust the rudder. With my wife holding the rudder control steady and then trying it after I re looped and tightened the rudder control cord. It worked perfectly.
The data came from NZ and OZ. I printed out copies of what to do and adjustments are simple task as preventive measures before we use the yak.
I don’t use Google until Yahoo or another search engine fails.
A big weakness with FR now is the lack of key words update like “Trump”. With all of the articles on Trump, the keyword “Trump” is not in the key word list.
Thanks for the tip. I’ve been on FR for quite some time, and I’ve found that the internal search engine is lacking.
You’re the man!
I agree. The search should be on titles, not keywords.
But the purpose of my original post is to help others, not criticize FR.
I find that the best way to search any website is to yippy (or google) it by name, rather than use the search field provided by the site.
Even then, you also get “generic hits” in which the link just takes you to the main page of the website... and the content you’re looking for (which the search engine claimed it just found) is nowhere to be seen.
a better way to ensure your search only looks at FR is to use the search clause: site:freerepublic.com
