Now for a few humble thoughts about Dominique Strauss-Kahn and his recent brush with law and journalism, bearing in mind that it's possible indeed, maybe even likely, that he is guilty as the prosecutors charge:
1.) If he is such a womanizer and violent guy with women, why didn't he ever get charged until now? If he has a long history of sexual abuse, how can it have remained no more than gossip this long? France is a nation of vicious political rivalries. Why didn't his opponents get him years ago?
2.) In life, events tend to follow patterns. People who commit crimes tend to be criminals, for example. Can anyone tell me any economists who have been convicted of violent sex crimes? Can anyone tell me of any heads of nonprofit international economic entities who have ever been charged and convicted of violent sexual crimes? Is it likely that just by chance this hotel maid found the only one in this category? Maybe Mr. Strauss-Kahn is guilty but if so, he is one of a kind, and criminals are not usually one of a kind.

Ben Stein has obviously taken too much of the medication that he claims his hotel maids stole from him. I have not seen anyone stretch so far to defend this Socialist Frog.
Or perhaps the problem is that he didn't get a refill.
Hollywood requires mr Ben to correct his straying ways. As an “ageing” psuedo star he has no doubt a tougher time finding jobs other than reprises of his “Bueller” role.
Remember, his dad worked for Nixon- mr. price controls. No conservative he.
Sadder still is this absolutely lame defense of a pervert french socialist at a meddling world socialist bank that is ruining and has ruined many country’s economies. One reason being that while you are sodomizing the little people maids as a sex pervert, you don’t pay any attention to the real world of economics— you don’t have to! It’s how socialism works.
Yeah, there aren't many other stout, late-middle-aged white guys with a mean expression out there. I'm if he tried to drive out of New York, or get on another plane, hundreds of people would have run after him screaming, "OMG, Edith, it's Dominique Strauss-Kahn. Follow him!"
Important men shouldn’t be locked up in prison with the common herd of lowlifes.
Why not?
If Rikers is such a horrible place, and I assume Ben is correct about that, then we shouldn’t be locking anybody up there.
However, Ben is correct that the maid may indeed be lying. This is a binary case, either he’s lying or she is. Until the trial has taken place, we should give the frog the presumption of innocence.
I thought Ben’s claim that he can’t be guilty because others would have accused him previously quite silly. Maybe he has indeed had a pattern of such behavior and has gotten away with it till now because he is rich and powerful.
The fact that he apparently expected Diane Sawyer (”a blonde woman from one of the television networks who is notorious for her stupidity,” as P.J. O’Rourke put it) to reserve judgment rather than engaging in feminist grandstanding indicates that either Ben is having a mental breakdown, or this is supposed to be a parody.
Say it ain’t so, Ben. What a shame.
Indeed.
“I thought Bens claim that he cant be guilty because others would have accused him previously.”
An odd Bill Clinton defense Ben is making.
I.e.: “Clinton cant be guilty because others would have accused him previously”
What I'm hearing is that such behavior is rather common among French politicians, and they adhere to the common maxim regarding throwing stones whilst residing in a glass house.
What we DO know is that women WILL lie about these things. A lot of them anyway.
I don’t know if the man is guilty, or not. I wouldn’t mind seeing him thrown in jail for being a thieving, taxing socialist. Would that it were against the law.
But he may, or may not, have sexually assaulted this woman. Without corroborating evidence, he should be found “not guilty”. The unsupported word of someone is never enough to convict, IMNSHO
Say what?
To me this reinforces that rape isn't about sex. He could have paid for sex -but then the woman would be leaving with his money and his power.
Tristane Banon, French accuser.
Of course not, but this Frog left the hotel room in such a hurry after this event that he left his cell phone behind and hopped on the first Air France flight to a non extradition country. Do you know anyone, especially an important person, who isn't attached to their phone. Add that to "The Great Seducers" history and there is a lot to wonder about this guys innocence. Women CAN lie about rape, but why would we dismiss this because he is the head of the IMF?
Stein needs to do some googling before he goes off half-cocked.
It appears, if he hadn't called the hotel for his phone, he would have escaped to France easily. As it was, they got him only ten minutes before wheels up.
So, it would seem he was not remotely aware of how much trouble he was in. You get used to droit de seigneur when you're a top Frog, I guess, and tend to forget where you are.
I am NOT dismissing it. He sounds like the kind of person who could well be a rapist.
All I’m saying is that he is entitled to a presumption of innocence, and that if I were a juror, I’d not only want to,b ut I feel that it would be my duty to look at all the evidence before coming to a decision, one way or the other.
I hate to suggest this, but: ethnic-religious solidarity?
Reportedly she gave a sensational interview on French media in which she described the encounter, with the perp's name bleeped. But everyone who was anybody in Paris knew the identity of the bleepee.
