"What's up your butt?" Billboard... Poor taste or Effective? (Colon Cancer )
cbs47 ^ | 5-27-11 | cakid1

This is a serious subject, but I love the picture.

In Washington State a billboard designed to get folks to have their colon checked is causing a bit of a fuss. So much so, that the health board in Washington state has voted against endorsing the colon cancer awareness campaign - with a billboard that says:

"What's up your butt?"

The Benton Franklin Health District said the vote was in response to complaints that the ads are in poor taste. The butt billboards displayed to raise colorectal cancer awareness and encourage people to get screened for the disease.

If it gets people thinking.. why not?

I am a colon cancer survivor. Stage 3: resection of a lemon-size tumor followed by 6 months of chemo. I nearly did not make it a couple of times. 4 Years remission creeping up Jul 5, all clear.

I found out there is a surgeon in town named Dr Butts, and an oncologist named Dr Heyne. I did not use Butts but did go to Heyne. I found out about the surgeon too late to use him. It would have been appropriate to be treated by Butts and Heyne for colon cancer.

Prevention is possible with colon cancer but I knew nothing about it - the more publicity for that, the better.

Colon cancer is not very glamorous but we victims sure appreciate all the encouragement and support. We do not get the pink ribbons and dancing and etc. It is just as deadly as any cancer, very scary, and yet I am here to tell you complete healing is possible - pray a lot and watch for the miracles, and give thanks.

Colon cancer screening is only for men? You sure about that?

Several years ago, my MIL had heart surgery. We all thought it was appropriate her doctor's name was Dr. Love. :-)

Glad to hear you're in remission!

Bad taste? Yes, probably.

If it saves 1 life, I am for it.

I spent last summer with my Dad at M.D. Anderson in Houston watching him fight cancer. He is still cancer free, thank God.

Cancer fights dirty, so anything we can do to get people to watch out for this bully... I am for it.

So, the Government says no..?

The commissioners first approved the plan and then rejected it when confronted by a barrage of criticism from constituents (the next day, actually). There is an on-going controversy concerning the open meeting law and the fact that private email was used to arrive at the decision. We were not going to permit the billboards to go up or stay up regardless. The coarsening of language and introduction of homosexual lexicon were not going to fly around here. Everyone already knows about colonoscopies anyway (we have one of the highest proportions of Ph.Ds and engineers in the country). My own reaction to these billboards (if they had stood for more than a day or two) would be to permanently avoid the endoscopy due to its association with this vulgar campaign.

Are you? How about this -- Obamacare requirement (mandate) for males over 50 to have a biennial colonoscopy or lose all related treatment coverage. There is the possibility it would save one life. Are you for it?

I don’t think it will save one life. I think a 100% tax on everyone will save one life though. Would that be worth it?

....

Going into the gutter is not going to benefit anyone.

That's not what the story was about but since you asked...

If you read Obamacare, which most of the House and Senate did not do before they voted for it, cancer treatment for a man my dad's age would most likely be withheld as part of rationing.

The Canadians I met at MD Anderson came down to the States because the wait for "free health care" in Canada is just too long. Under Obamacare, that is what we could look forward to seeing.

Colon ca is a horrible, horrible illness. I just lost a dear friend this winter - he was in his 40’s and a wonderful man, pastor of a church. He went down from a buff and strong figure to skin and bones.

The treatment is horrid, too. Remember Tony Snow.

Please people - get a colonoscopy- the prep is yukky but SO worth it! The sooner you get those nasties the better off you will be.

One more thing - it says age 50. If you have anyone in your immediate family that had the illness, the recommendation is to start TEN years before the onset stage - if a family member had it at 40, your first test should be at 30.

And supposedly the aspirin a day thing helps with Colon Ca risk.

Well, the ad got attention - enough to get an article written about it and to get over a dozen people remarking on it in this forum. I think it’s doing it’s job, definitely.

Good Lord... Sure, it’s a little off-color in the humor dept, but I’m having a real hard time taking any serious ‘offense’ to it. People (not you AUG), there are far more important things to get the panties bunched up over than this. Might behoove ya’ll to get riled up over them instead.

Having an IBD, I am pretty familiar with that test. It sucks, but ya gotta do what ya gotta do. And if people were less uptight about the whole subject (which appears to be what the ad is trying to do using a bit of RELATED humor), many of them might just get tested and save their own lives.
