Well, if you're in San Francisco...

I am a colon cancer survivor. Stage 3: resection of a lemon-size tumor followed by 6 months of chemo. I nearly did not make it a couple of times. 4 Years remission creeping up Jul 5, all clear.

I found out there is a surgeon in town named Dr Butts, and an oncologist named Dr Heyne. I did not use Butts but did go to Heyne. I found out about the surgeon too late to use him. It would have been appropriate to be treated by Butts and Heyne for colon cancer.

Prevention is possible with colon cancer but I knew nothing about it - the more publicity for that, the better.

Colon cancer is not very glamorous but we victims sure appreciate all the encouragement and support. We do not get the pink ribbons and dancing and etc. It is just as deadly as any cancer, very scary, and yet I am here to tell you complete healing is possible - pray a lot and watch for the miracles, and give thanks.

So, the Government says no..?

The commissioners first approved the plan and then rejected it when confronted by a barrage of criticism from constituents (the next day, actually). There is an on-going controversy concerning the open meeting law and the fact that private email was used to arrive at the decision. We were not going to permit the billboards to go up or stay up regardless. The coarsening of language and introduction of homosexual lexicon were not going to fly around here. Everyone already knows about colonoscopies anyway (we have one of the highest proportions of Ph.Ds and engineers in the country). My own reaction to these billboards (if they had stood for more than a day or two) would be to permanently avoid the endoscopy due to its association with this vulgar campaign.

Colon ca is a horrible, horrible illness. I just lost a dear friend this winter - he was in his 40’s and a wonderful man, pastor of a church. He went down from a buff and strong figure to skin and bones.

The treatment is horrid, too. Remember Tony Snow.

Please people - get a colonoscopy- the prep is yukky but SO worth it! The sooner you get those nasties the better off you will be.

One more thing - it says age 50. If you have anyone in your immediate family that had the illness, the recommendation is to start TEN years before the onset stage - if a family member had it at 40, your first test should be at 30.

And supposedly the aspirin a day thing helps with Colon Ca risk.

Well, the ad got attention - enough to get an article written about it and to get over a dozen people remarking on it in this forum. I think it’s doing it’s job, definitely.

I had my 50,000 mile check-up two years ago and am happy to report that I have a colon of a 24 year old.

For those who have not had it done yet, it really is nothing, and it very well could save your life. The worse part is the fluid diet and Drano they have you take the day prior to the surgery.

As for the sign, that is bad taste.

Welllllllllllllll, at least they didn’t show a picture they might have shown if it was in San Francisco! Ewwwww

My biopsy from 6 polyps came back negative—i.e. NOT MALIGNANT! PRAISE GOD!

Am very thankful. Glad I went through with the procedure. One of those polyps looked as big as the tip of my little finger.

For those wary of the procedure—it’s nothing—quite easy to go through. I woke up as they were about to excise the last polyp—the big one. Didn’t feel anything.

The prep—the night before—that’s something else. Still, it could have been worse than guzzling 4 litre of mild salty tasting liquid.

I think next time, I might stop solid foods 2 days before though they don’t require it until two evenings before.

And I misunderstood—one needs to have NOTHING after midnight the day before the procedure. Thankfully, I only had a little apple juice. They don’t want any aspirations into the lungs while one is ‘out.’ I’m glad I scheduled it in the morning at 10:30. I think that was about right. 10:00 would have been OK.

All in all—get er done—knowledge is better than ignorance—particularly on such issues.

Evidently, BTW, there’s a flax seed oil and cottage cheese daily that can do wonders against cancer. I’m not up on that. Maybe someone who is will elaborate.

Tacky, but who cares? If it works, use it.

Colon cancer kills needlessly. If more people were tested, fewer would die.

Eddie Murphy had a song called "Boogie in your Butt." It was pretty funny, IIRC. For those of us who have had a colonoscopy, the answer will hopefully NOT be "A big Nikon."

When I read it my first reaction was to laugh.......I didn't find it offensive at all. Colonoscopys save lives, period. I had my first one in April of 2008 at the age of 58 and was given the all clear sign. (guess that stuff you drink helped).

Last year a good friend of mine had his first one at the age of 60 and the doctor found several polyps that turned out to be cancerous. He's doing ok now but had he not had the colonoscopy who knows what would have happened.

There's too darn many people on this planet so somebody's bound to get a bug up their butt about the sign............Let it stay.

>> “What say you?” <<

The billboard is STUPID!

Surgery is totally unnecessary to determine if you have cancer, potentially dangerous, and not terribly accurate either.

If you really want to know absolutely if you have cancer, get a HCG Urine test.

The test is cheap ($60 +/-) and infallible.

Best part is that you can do it yourself without even seeing a doctor.
