Astronomy Picture of the Day -- Earth Rotating Under Very Large Telescopes
NASA ^ | June 01, 2011 | (see photo credit)

[Credit: S. Guisard & Jose Francisco Salgado, ESO, Bulletpeople.com; Music: Arcadia (License: Kevin Macleod)] Explanation: Why is the Earth moving in the above video? Most time lapse videos of the night sky show the stars and sky moving above a steady Earth. Here, however, the frames have been digitally rotated so that it is the stars that stay (approximately) steady, and the Earth that moves beneath them. The video dramatically shows the actual rotation of the Earth, called diurnal motion, in a clear and moving way, as if the camera were floating free in space. The telescopes featured in the video are the Very Large Telescopes (VLT) in Chile, a group of four of the largest optical telescopes deployed anywhere in the world. A discerning observer of the above time lapse movie may also note the use of laser guide stars, zodiacal light, the Large and Small Magellanic Clouds, and fast-moving, sunlight-reflecting, Earth-orbiting satellites. The original video, on which the above sequences are based, can be found here.

Spectacular, Civ. What a great idea they had to make the stars stand still so the earth’s movement showed instead. Really cool.

Beautiful

I reserve this word for the personal experience of the night sky itself. Representations of it, no matter how interesting and educational, never approach this.

But yes, this is a very nice montage.

It’s HTML 5, like the videos here on FR now are. I didn’t attempt to EMBED it, or even to link to it. I was a little disappointed that it wasn’t a usable pic as usual.

I had just looked at it from this thread, then when I went back it was gone.

N.B. ... nicolas fabian bustos vargas

( No caps in notice at site. )

I searched the name, and all I got was a spanish version of the copyright claim. I ain’t gonna buy it from him, that’s for sure ... saw it already!

And furthermore, where does he come off copyrighting images of the VLT, operated by the ESO, which is credited in the blurb for the pulled video? Who let him up there? I get the feeling a little blowback may be coming his way.

It’s all good. I didn’t just hang my head and wring my hands in futility.

I have five different links open in five tabs, watching it.

The thing about the world wide web is it’s world wide.

The needs of the many outweigh the needs of the few, or the one.

KMA fabian.
