Astronomy Picture of the Day -- The Perseus Cluster of Galaxies
NASA ^ | July 12, 2011 | (see photo credit)

Posted on 07/12/2011 3:02:00 AM PDT by SunkenCiv

Explanation: Here is one of the largest objects that anyone will ever see on the sky. Each of these fuzzy blobs is a galaxy, together making up the Perseus Cluster, one of the closest clusters of galaxies. The cluster is seen through a foreground of faint stars in our own Milky Way Galaxy. Near the cluster center, roughly 250 million light-years away, is the cluster's dominant galaxy NGC 1275, seen above as a large galaxy on the image left. A prodigious source of x-rays and radio emission, NGC 1275 accretes matter as gas and galaxies fall into it. The Perseus Cluster of Galaxies, also cataloged as Abell 426, is part of the Pisces-Perseus supercluster spanning over 15 degrees and containing over 1,000 galaxies. At the distance of NGC 1275, this view covers about 15 million light-years.

Proof of God.

My idea of heaven is spending eternity exploring it all and what may be beyond it.

So little time, so many galaxies....

I remember when I first saw a picture of the Andromeda Galaxy (M31, NCG 224); I began to get an idea of just how big our universe really is.

Up until about 1925 it was believed that our galaxy was the entire universe.

You'll have eternity to do all that and more! How about getting to know everyone who has ever lived and ever will--in this and all other worlds!

There's much to look forward to!

Hey,Guys I was looking at this photo and blew it up and found a very interesting image that looked transparent. It’s between the tracks and to the right. Tell me what you guys see?http://129.164.179.22/apod/ap110620.html

If you’re talking about what looks like a ghost of a person, I’m pretty much positive its the result of a long exposure.
I can also tell that the photo was taken through a narrow aperture because of the starburst light effect.

I assume the person was walking and stopped for a few seconds long enough for the camera to record his image and continued on.

I like night photography and have intentionally created gohstly effects like that.

You’ll still have to catch a connecting flight in Atlanta.

Yes, but probably not to 99.9999% of humanity on earth today. Sobering thought, eh?

I am in awe at the size of the Universe.

Still can’t get over 15 million light years in one photo, right here in front of me. Wow.

It also looks like there are some instances of the Sabattier effect, especially two in the crowd of spectators.

In the lower lefthand corner near the bright light, it looks like the same person was captured by the camera twice as if he stopped, took a few steps and stopped again.

Actually there are lots of “ghosts” in the picture as people move around.
