NEW YORK, - The New York City Health Department has been cracking down on animals in bars, much to the dismay of pet and bar owners.
Between July 1, 2010, and June 30, 2011, the health department issued 469 citations for having live animals in bars and restaurants, The New York Times reported.
The crackdown means Miles, a 9-year-old boxer-pug mix can no longer go into the Ace Bar.
"He's a dog, but I swear he looks sad," Mike Israely, 33, the dog's owner. "Coming here was part of our evening walk."
City health codes have always found dogs near beer taps a violation, but many bars have disregarded the rule; NYC has a long history of dog-friendly establishments. In the 19th century, saloons often employed dogs as security.
Many residents deem quality of an establishment by whether or not they allow dogs. Allowing dogs is a sign of a "a proper neighborhood bar," Christine Sismondo, the author of "America Walks Into a Bar."
"It proves you're not one of those corporate B.Y.O.F. bars: bring your own friends."
Good Dog indeed!
One of the legal definitions of a “Service Animal” is “one who provides “EMOTIONAL SUPPORT”.
That could cover a LOT of things! LOL!
If I could please interrupt this great thread, I was just curious if anyone’s dogs here like spicy food, ie semi-hot bbq. Because my mastiff loves the stuff. Hot jerky, stuff like that.
My Lab-Chesapeake mix loves to share hot pepper cheese.
My dog sits on the couch like that.
LOL...My old Shepherd Timber loved spicy salsa and jalapeno peppers. When he smelled them he would start drooling...actually blowing spit bubbles out from his flews. But he’d eat ‘em!
Yep, pepper jack. I like it on crackers, but I didn’t want to give him soemthing that would hurt him.
Hasn’t been a problem yet. I like it too much to share more than 1/2 the body mass ratio to her.
Ok. I’m betting ADA requires the bars to allow assist dogs. But if having dogs around food is a health risk, why should people be put at risk just so others can bring in their assist dogs.
And if, as I suspect, there isn’t really a health risk, why can’t everybody bring dogs in if the owner allows it?
Yeah, I bet that happens a lot.
Upon rereading your post I see that it is kinda gay too.
In my younger days I used to bartend. I never thought about rules, laws or regulations when it came to dogs. All dogs were welcome in my bars. Just keep them out of the kitchen. My dad used to bring his chihuahua down once in a while. That little dog was a chick magnet. (nobody tell mom, okay?)
“It should be up to the owner of the bar, plain and simple.”
I agree and if I owned a pub, I would cater to Retired Greyhounds! Bring yer paws on in....
Well, I’ll let him try them, then. For a mastiff, he’s a picky eater. But he loves the smell of pepperjack cheese, and I’ve been tempted to let him have a bite or two. He will not touch Beneful. Literally turns up his nose.
What is it about losers? Y’all just can’t disagree with something without a personal insult.
You're expecting LAWS to be self consistent and logical?
My late Jack Russell, Digger, Loved Kimchee.
KIMCHEE!!!!!
A modern literal meaning won't hurt you.
