Didn't get the job? Blame 'lookism', as discrimination against the ugly 'is the new racism'
The Daily Mail (UK) ^ | September 5, 2011 | Luke Salkeld

Some might consider it an ugly truth that attractive people are often more successful than those less blessed with looks.

But now our appearance is emerging in legal disputes as a new kind of discrimination.

‘Lookism’, it is claimed, is the new racism, and should be banished from civilised societies.

It is currently the subject of several court actions in America, and some experts say similar cases should be considered here too.

Economist Daniel Hamermesh argues that ugliness is no different from race or a disability, and suggests unattractive people deserve legal protection.

‘My research shows being good-looking helps you earn more money, find a higher-earning spouse and even get better deals on mortgages,’ he said.

‘Some people are born ugly and there’s not much they can do about it. You’re pretty much stuck with your looks.

Like Rush said, they must be pretty certain that there are a lot more ugly democrats than republicans, otherwise, they wouldn’t be considering such a law.

You knew this was coming.

Finally, this is recognized! As a tortured kid I can appreciate this (and I was not at all fat - more commonly recognized form of discrimination than ugliness - we get no respect!). ;-)

Anyway, I think the bottom line is anyone should be allowed to discriminate any way they wish. Yes, I said that, and meant it fully. Get rid of ALL “discrimination” laws.

That’s why they have government and university jobs.

So the crude, the mad and the ugly can pretend to support themselves.

This is simply a reality of life.

Every watch the reporters on local TV, or FoxNEWS? Is it really just random chance that every single one of the major network anchors is extremely attractive? Can anyone name an unattractive news anchor on Fox, or any other major network?

Ugly people, tend to know they are unattractive - and knowing so, they do not pursue a career in which their success is measured by how they look; but rather by what they can do. Hence the phrase “A face just made for radio”.

Dancing With The Stars covered their ass and hired the ugliest, fattest woman that looks like a man they could find.

not so. I had to hire someone, only interviewed 2 women (it was before the crash) one was a 10 and the other a 1. As it turns out the most qualified was the 1, and she got the job. We were also sure that she wouldn't fall prey to charms of all the boytoys she had to deal with in the course of her work.

Furthermore it was clear the 10 only brought her "mojo" to the interview (and it was powerful, I admit) while the 1 brought herself and her experience; she served the company faithfully for another 5 years or so before she and her hus. moved to FL.

It’s true anyways. In my biz, Hollywood, it’s the norm. That’s the question that every human resource director gets asked, as 2 of my friends are in HR. If u are good-looking, you will get ahead in life. If you look like Rosie O Donnell, the odds are against you. Ever since college, all my GF’s would tell me they don’t go to any cosmetic dept if the woman behind the counter isn’t pretty. They are a projection of the beauty product.

I've read that many symphony tryouts are "blined"...

To try to guard against potential biases like gender and race — or being a friend, or foe, of one of the judges — in the first rounds of tryouts, players perform the music behind the screen. It's meant to ensure the most talented players win the audition, not necessarily the most attractive or those who can pull strings.

Look.

If you’re looking for someone to blame, it means you didn’t get the job because you’ve got a selfish entitlement mentality.

Back in the early 90s, I was part owner of a now long-defunct financial services firm.

One of my responsibilities was to hire an in-house attorney, who would report directly to me.

One of the candidates was a breath-takingly gorgeous woman.

I made the decision not to hire this woman for the sole reason that I found her extremely attractive and I knew that would be an intolerable distraction for me, especially since I had a steady girlfriend (whom I subsequently married, and am now in the process of amicably divorcing, alas — but that’s a different story).

Anyway, that was a case where the best looking candidate didn’t get the job precisely because of her looks (and brains and charm).

So I guess looks aren’t always an advantage.

I always thought it was so they could get even with everybody else.
The only cure for ugly is POWER.

or those who can pull strings.

Let's see. In a symphony tryout, you either pull strings, blow, or fiddle around. Unless you are a beater.

I see it the same way. People don’t realize that the segregation of the south was going away on its own before the government started passing laws. I don’t mean the stuff that was already illegal, like lynching, etc., rather, the whites only and “coloreds only” stuff. And if it had died of natural causes it would have been much more empowering to the negroes that it affected.

When the government “did it for them”, contrary to the constitution, it created a dependent class - a class dependent on the government to solve their problems.

Is it “fair”. Probably not. But then, “fair” is a word that is almost missing from the Bible. The term is just way too subjective. Besides, I’d rather be poor and in control of my life than rich (or living off welfare) but be dependent on “the man” for all my income and opportunity.

Gee, that sounds a little like slavery, come to think of it.

This is just the beginning.

Next: IQ-ism.

It's not your fault you aren't smart enough for medical school, engineering, or the law, and it's discriminatory for employers and universities to hold you back based solely on your intelligence!
