My Weapon Of Choice

I actually had to use this once, in a South Florida Park, against four Yutes who were armed with baseball bats. I won. (see my user name and avatar!)
The extra long bolt on Two Octave neck provides excellent balance for a long, swift swing, perfectly balanced by the solid hardwood counterweight. The extra heavy strings and solid stainless steel bridge and pickups have sharp pointy edges and are an added bonus.
My Les Paul doesn't leave the house and is designated "Music Only",

God Bless America!

They do tend to make an, um, impression. I came too close to using one as a baseball bat once. Turned out to be the guitar of the guy I was ready to whack.....

I’ve got a Gibson SG, Gibson Les Paul and a Fender Telecaster. I’m going to go to the Tele for home defense.

+1

I've got two Gibson Les Pauls, an Epi 335, a Fender Strat and a Fender Tele and while reading this story at the source, the first thing that entered my mind would be what guitar I'd choose to beat someone senseless. The Telecaster instantly came to mind for the very reasons you mentioned.

Plus, after defending myself, the Tele would likely still be in tune.

Abbie Hoffman, actually.

ogawd that's beautiful. I might have started liking The Who sooner had I known that.

did you ever hear about how abbie shook down the promoters of woodstock? I think they had to pay him ten grand in 1969 dollars for "protection."

I’ve got 3 Teles, 1 LP jr, a jazzmaster (all of which I made myself) and a Charvel with a reverse pointy headstock.

The Charvel can probably carve a rare piece of prime rib. I’m grabbing that.

“If you’re buying a guitar for self-defense, I’d suggest an older Gibson Les Paul. Twelve-pounders are common and ones tipping the scales at slightly over thirteen pounds have been reported.”

The reissue models will also work for this purpose (they have non-chambered bodies, just like the originals) without requiring a third mortgage on your house.

And don’t hate on Strats. I’m sure I could do plenty of damage with my poplar-bodied MIM Stratocaster if push came to shove.

On that note, I bet a Jackson Soloist would probably work REALLY well for home defense, given that it’s a neck-through-body design.

That money probably just about covered the skull trauma treatment....LOL

It does have a bizarre but perfect symmetry, doesn’t it?

In a fit of synchronicity, VH1 Classics *just* ran a documentary on Woodstock and a renown graphic novel artist was on the show with his “depiction” of the Hoffman head-whacking.

It was hysterical...:)

Pete Townsend “kabonged” Abbie Hoffman at Woodstock when he grabbed the microphone and screamed “Free Rubin Sinclair”.
The proper term for smashing your guitar according to Townsend is “Lunching”.

Someone mentioned a Strat as Townshend's weapon in this instance. I could be wrong, but watching the film I could have sworn he was using an SG...

What I find interesting about Townshend's red Strat is that it's an Eric Clapton Artist Series model. Also, Pete's has an extra volume knob behind the bridge; this controls the volume on the piezo bridge he had installed so he could switch between "acoustic" and "electric" parts.

Maybe so. The "Strat" story comes from some interview I read some years ago, with another guitar great (can't recall whom, right now) who said how much he admired Townsend for clubbing someone "with his Strat." It could be he was mistaken, or perhaps more likely, Townsend must have bopped somebody else when he was playing a Strat somewhere.
